Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team beat a pair of top five nationally-ranked teams and made their first SUNYAC playoff appearance under third year Head Coach
Kalie Hart during the 2024-25 campaign.
The Roos started their season off with a bang
earning the highest ranked victory of any of SUNY Canton's sports in school history when they defeated No. 2 nationally-ranked Adrian on the road 1-0 in OT on November 1st. Sophomore
Abby Seaman recorded a 42 save shutout in her debut with the Roos and classmate
Riley Andzel scored the game-winner 1 minute, 44 seconds into overtime of the thrilling win.
The team earned their second top five win in a two-week span when they
defeated No. 5/4 nationally-ranked Cortland 2-1 at home during Hockey Reunion Weekend. Sophomore
Joey Schemenauer and freshman
Bailey Cote each scored a goal and sophomore
Molly Lenihan made 41 saves in the victory.
The other first semester wins included a SUNYAC sweep of Buffalo State (2-1, 3-2) on Thanksgiving weekend (11/29-30). Andzel
scored the game-winner at 13:50 of the third period on November 29th and
Taryn Oloriz netted the winner,
her first collegiate goal, on Saturday.
SUNY Canton went unbeaten in a conference weekend against Potsdam in January. Lenihan recorded a 31 save shutout and
Kyra O'Keefe scored a first period goal in a
1-0 win on January 24th in Potsdam. The following afternoon at home, Andzel scored and Lenihan turned aside 36 shots in a
1-1 OT tie before Canton won the shootout.
The Roos followed that up with another unbeaten weekend, this time with a tie and win against Chatham at home in non-league action.
Alyssa Townsley recorded her first career shutout with a 30 save performance and
Ally Bickford netted her first career goal, the game-winner, in
a 4-0 win on February 1st.
Needing a big final weekend to make the playoffs the Roos came up huge with a road sweep at Morrisville. Townsley
turned aside 34 shots in a 3-1 win on February 21st and
Isabella Paswaters netted the overtime winner in a 3-2 win on February 22nd. Canton battled in a SUNYAC semifinal playoff game falling 2-1 at No. 4/2 nationally-ranked Oswego as
Chamonix Jackson got Canton within a goal with 1 minute, 44 seconds left in the third period.
During the season eight players earned 10 different weekly awards from the SUNYAC. Lenihan was named the Goaltender of the Week twice (11/18, 1/27) and Townsley was tabbed both the Goaltender and Rookie of the Week (2/25).
Abby Seaman also earned Goaltender of the Week honors (11/4), while Andzel (12/2) and Paswaters (2/25) were recognized as Athlete of the Week. Bickford (11/4), Cote (11/12), and Oloriz (12/2) joined Townsley picking up Rookie of the Week accolades.
The Roos are expected to lose
Kamryn Barnes and
Desiree Snook to graduation.
