Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Nate Hart, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications & Marketing

Seaman and Andzel Lead Women’s Hockey to 1-0 OT Victory at #2 Adrian

Adrian, MI – Sophomore Abby Seaman recorded a 42 save shutout in her debut with the Roos and classmate Riley Andzel scored the game-winner 1 minute, 44 seconds into overtime to lead the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a 1-0 win at No. 2 nationally-ranked Adrian College in both team's season openers on Friday evening.

The win is the highest ranked victory in school history for the Roos and the second win against a ranked opponent for the women's hockey team in program history. The SUNY Canton women's hockey team defeated No. 13 ranked SUNY Cortland last season on December 6, 2023, while the SUNY Canton men's hockey team beat No. 3 ranked Adrian on December 30, 2018, which was previously the highest ranked win in school history at the NCAA Division III level.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 1, #2 Adrian 0 (OT)
  • Location: Roos House – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-0-0) | Adrian (0-1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Adrian controlled shots 10-3 in the opening period as Ally Bickford, Bailey Cote and Kylah Small registered a shot each for the Roos as the teams were scoreless after 20 minutes.
  • Both team's penalty kill units went 2-for-2 killing off four total penalties in the second period. The Bulldogs played stifling defense holding Canton without a shot in the middle period, but Seaman stopped all 15 shots she faced in the second to keep the game scoreless through two periods.
  • Seaman stopped 15 more shots in the third, while Canton's offense generated more scoring chances with six shots. Andzel led the way with a pair of shots in the period as the teams would need OT to decide the game.
  • Seaman stopped a pair of shots early in OT and the Roos first shot of the extra session was all they would need. Skating 3-on-3 in OT, Bickford poked the puck loose to Andzel as she and Anna Pavlasova skated 2-on-1 through the neutral zone. Andzel had Pavlasova to her right forcing the defenseman to make a decision, as Andzel wristed a shot top shelf for the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Adrian outshot the Roos 42-10 in the game and held a 36-22 edge in faceoffs.
  • Both teams committed three penalties going 0-for-3 on the power play.
  • Seaman recorded a 42 saves shutout with 10 saves in the first period, 15 each in the second and third periods and two in OT. Annie Gilbert turned aside nine shots in defeat.
