Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team played a 31 game schedule including eight games in sunny Myrtle Beach in their first season as a member of the SUNYAC under first year Head Coach
Kelsy Waite during the 2025 season.
The Roos scored a season-high eight runs against Franciscan in their final game in South Carolina on March 14th.
Sarah Balcom went a perfect 4-for-4, while
Maggi Yandoh and
Ace Rogers had two hits each,
Ava Hayes drove in two runs and
Torie Moore tripled.
Canton nearly upset Fredonia to kick off the month of May. The Roos
rallied for two runs in their final at-bats and had the tying run on second base before ultimately falling 5-4.
Moore led the Roos hitting .311 with a .354 on-base % with 23 hits, 11 runs, three triples and two doubles. Balcom hit .274 with a .312 on-base % with 20 hits, six runs, four doubles, a triple and eight RBI.
Ace Rogers made 27 appearances and 22 starts on the mound logging 126.0 innings. Maggie Yandoh started eight of her nine appearances throwing 27.2 innings.
Following the academic year nine members of the softball team were named to the
SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for carrying a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or higher during the 2024-25 academic year. Balcom,
Andrea Cary,
Marissa Hawkins,
Ava Hayes,
Emily Hobart, Moore,
Rylynn Martin-McIntyre, Rogers and
Jordyn Tarbox all accomplished the feat.
Balcom, Hawkins and Rogers were also named to the
College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team as they were sophomores or older maintaining at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and participated in at least 90% of their team's contests or started 66% of their team's games with pitchers throwing 35 or more innings.
Balcom, a dual sport athlete on the softball and women's volleyball team, also earned the prestigious
SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence (CASE). She graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in Individual Studies in 2022 and the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program in 2023. She has consistently earned a place on the President's Honors List. Balcom is a recipient of the SUNY Canton Spirit of Success Award and holds a New York State Coaching Certification and a Minor in Applied Psychology.
The Roos are expected to lose Cary, Balcom, Moore and Hawkins to graduation.
