Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team competed in nearly 30 games including seven in sunny Myrtle Beach in their first season as a member of the SUNYAC in 2025 under Head Coach
Ryan Stevens.
The Roos split their season-opening doubleheader against Baruch in February winning the nightcap in thrilling
walk-off fashion.
Lance Phillips Jr. hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth and
Daniel Aviles threw three innings of no-hit ball to earn the win.
Canton opened its South Carolina trip on March 11th with a
doubleheader sweep against Penn State Beaver earning 7-4 and 16-11 wins.
Sal Diaz registered three doubles and drove in five runs in the opener, while
Chris McLean,
AJ Campi and
Eliezer Vazquez recorded three hits each in the nightcap.
After a rocky stretch to end March and kick off April the Roos got on track taking a road SUNYAC series at Fredonia on April 12th and 13th. Canton
won the first game of the weekend series 10-1 before coming out on top 11-3 in the final contest of the three game set. Phillips Jr. recorded three hits and drove in two runs while McLean, Campi, Vazquez and
Bradley Mills also had multi-hit games in the first win with
Kayden Guerin tossing eight innings of one run ball. Diaz recorded three hits, a homer and drove in two runs
in the 11-3 win, while
Edilberto Rosado recorded three RBI and Campi, Phillips Jr.
Mark Maybee Jr. and
Derek Maldonado had multi-hit games.
One if not the Roos
most thrilling game of the season came on April 14th in the nightcap against Plattsburgh State. Trailing 14-10 entering their final at-bats the Roos scored five runs culminating in a Campi bases-clearing three RBI walk-off triple as Canton defeated the Cardinals 15-14 for a SUNYAC win.
Following the season Diaz was named to both the
American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com All-Region Third Team in Region 3. He was also named the SUNY Canton Athletics department's
Co-Male Student-Athlete of the Year. Both Diaz and Phillips Jr. earned
SUNYAC Second Team All-Conference honors for their performances throughout the season.
Twelve members of the baseball team (
Jake Detlefsen,
Keegan Franklin,
Liam Hohertz,
Hunter LaValley, Maybee Jr., McLean, Mills,
Alfredo Pabon, Phillips Jr.,
Matt Richards,
Maxwell Rose, Vazquez) were named to the
SUNYAC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for earning a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average for the 2024-25 academic year.
Additionally, five members of the team earned
College Sports Communicators (CSC) At-Large Academic All-District for maintaining at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and participating in at least 90% or starting 66% of their team's games.
The Roos are expected to lose
Kayden Guerin,
Hunter LaValley,
John LaPorte,
Alphonse Fuca and
Bradley Mills to graduation.
