Campi’s Walk-Off Three RBI Triple Leads Baseball to Monday Split with Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – Sophomore AJ Campi came up clutch with a three RBI bases-clearing triple with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lifts the SUNY Canton baseball team to a thrilling 15-14 win in the nightcap as they earned a SUNYAC split with visiting Plattsburgh State on Monday. Trailing by four runs entering their final at-bats the Roos rallied for five runs to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Plattsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs on three hits and an error in their first at-bats. After the Cardinals added another run in the second, the Roos responded with two runs in the bottom of the second.
  • Edilberto Rosado drew a one out walk and Derek Maldonado followed with a single to left. Alphonse Fuca appeared to hit a three-run homer to right center, but the play was called a ground-rule double as Rosado scored from second and Maldonado moved to third. With two outs Campi reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman that extended the inning allowing Maldonado to score.
  • The Cardinals blew the game open with five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings as they combined for seven hits to take a 14-2 lead after their at-bats in the fifth.
  • The Roos got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth as Campi opened the inning with a single and Sal Diaz cracked a two-run homer to left center.
  • Plattsburgh tacked on two more runs in the seventh for the 16-4 run-rule win.
  • Diaz led the Roos going 2-for-4 with a single and homer driving in two runs, while Fuca had a double and RBI. Campi, Maldonado, Eliezer Vazquez and Lance Phillips Jr. finished with one hit each.
  • Josh Foglia paced Plattsburgh with four hits and an RBI, while Michael Piccirillo drove in three runs.
  • Jack Castillo picked up the win tossing five innings allowing three earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.
  • Maxwell Rose took the loss giving up seven earned runs with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
 

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Plattsburgh scored three runs on three hits in the opening inning.
  • The Roos responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning. Vazquez singled home Carlos Planas, Phillips Jr. was hit by a pitch to plate Campi and Fuca brought home Diaz on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Cardinals tacked on four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the third. Maldonado hit a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the frame as Plattsburgh led 7-4 after three.
  • Plattsburgh added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to open up a 9-4 advantage.
  • Canton came roaring back with five runs on four hits in the fifth to tie things up. Planas hit a two RBI double to right center scoring Mark Maybee Jr. and Fuca. Campi brought Maldonado across home plate on a sacrifice fly to right, Diaz singled home Planas and Maybee Jr. drew a walk to plate Diaz.
  • Canton took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Diaz led off with a single down the left field line and Vazquez singled through the left side. Phillips Jr. moved the runners over with a perfect sacrifice bunt to third. Maybee Jr. brought home the go-ahead run in Diaz on a sacrifice fly to right.
  • The Cardinals responded in the top of the eighth with a hit by pitch, a double and a sacrifice fly to tie the game as the Roos gunned down a runner on the basepaths just after the tying run scored.
  • Plattsburgh came through with four runs on three hits and an error in the top of the ninth to take a 14-10 lead.
  • However, the Roos wouldn't go down without a fight in an entertaining back-and-forth battle. Vazquez drew a leadoff walk and Phillips Jr. followed with a base hit to center. Maybee Jr. drew another walk to load the bases. With one out Maldonado was hit by a pitch to score one run before a pitching change. Rosado worked a walk to bring in a second run getting the Roos within two runs before a strikeout brought up Canton's final out.
  • Campi roped a triple to dead center over the head of the centerfielder emptying the bases on a three RBI walk-off triple for the thrilling victory.
  • Campi went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two walks and four RBI. Maldonado went 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs and two RBI. Diaz and Vazquez had two hits, two walks and an RBI each while combining to score four times. Planas and Maybee Jr. scored twice and drove in two runs each.
  • Colin Ross had a monster game for the Cardinals with three homers and five RBI, while Kyle Cremin also recorded three hits and drove in two runs.
  • Keegan Franklin picked up the win tossing the final 0.2 innings in relief.
  • Hunter Eberhart took the loss for Plattsburgh giving up just one hit, the Campi walk-off triple.

These two teams are scheduled for another single nine-inning game on Thursday in Canton at 3 p.m.
