McLean & Diaz Lead Canton Bats to 23 Run Day as Roos Sweep Lions

Myrtle Beach, SC – The Roos opened their Myrtle Beach trip with a 7-4 and 16-11 sweep over Penn State Beaver on Tuesday at the Ripken Experience. Junior Chris McLean crossed the plate six times on the day registering five hits including a triple and two doubles in the doubleheader. Junior Sal Diaz led the Roos with eight RBI on the day, with five of them coming in Game 1. Diaz had three doubles in Game 1 while McLean recorded two doubles in Game 2.

Sophomore AJ Campi also added three doubles in Game 2 and accounted for two RBI. Altogether, the Roos stole six bases on the day while eight players were hit by a pitch during the doubleheader. After the 2-0 start to the trip, the Roos are off to their first 3-1 start to a season since 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
  • Chris McLean led off the bottom half of the inning for the Roos with a triple down the right field line. He later scored the Roos opening run on an RBI groundout from Diaz.
  • The Roos and Lions each left one runner on base during the second inning, keeping the game at 2-1 in favor of the Lions.
  • After the Lions left a runner on base in the top of the third, the Roos roared ahead during the bottom of the third inning.
  • After McLean stole home to tie the game at 2-2, Sal Diaz notched a double to right center scoring Mark Maybee Jr. and putting the Roos in front for good.
  • The Lions stranded two runners in the top of the fourth inning and the Roos once again capitalized in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Roos scored three runs during the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 6-2 highlighted by a McLean RBI and Diaz's second double of the day as he drove in two more runs. McLean, Lance Phillips, and Carlos Planas all scored for the Roos during the inning.
  • The Lions would not go down without a fight during the top of the fifth where they scored two runs to trim the Canton lead to 6-4.
  • The Roos and Lions remained knotted at 6-4 through the top of the sixth inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Diaz laced his third double of the game bringing home Maybee Jr. adding to the Canton lead.
  • Daniel Aviles secured his second win of the season after pitching five complete innings. Aviles is 2-0 on the season and struck out three batters in the contest.
  • Maxwell Rose earned his first career save pitching the final two innings. He struck out two batters without giving up a hit sealing the victory for the Roos.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with McLean, AJ Campi, Diaz and Eliezer Vazquez all crossing home plate in the top of the first.
  • Campi doubled and Alfredo Pabon singled in the top of the first while Maybee and Campi each recorded an RBI.
  • The Lions evened the game at 4-4 bringing four runs across in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Roos opened up the second inning with the second double of the game for Campi before being brought home by Diaz.
  • Maybee Jr. doubled down the right field line with two outs bringing home pinch-runner Tom Santo.
  • The Roos led 6-4 after two innings.
  • Pabon and McLean both scored in the top of the third to extend their lead to 8-4.
  • The Lions recovered however with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the ball game at eight headed into the fourth inning.
  • In the top of the fourth Maybee Jr. opened with a single to right center. Maybee Jr. advanced to third on a single from Derek Maldonado and later crossed home on a sacrifice fly from Pabon.
  • The Roos surrendered two runs to the Lions in the bottom of the fourth making the game 10-9 in favor of the Lions.
  • The Penn State Beaver lead did not last long as the Roos scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning with four players being hit by a pitch in the inning.
  • The Lions added one run the in the bottom of the fifth inning trimming the Canton lead to 13-11.
  • The Roos cushioned their lead in the top of the seventh adding three runs from Phillips, Pabon and McLean with hits coming from Phillips, McLean and Campi during the inning
  • Seven players crossed the plate more than once for the Roos with McLean leading the way with three runs.
  • Javier Chico earned his first win of the year tossing 2.2 innings in relief allowing three earned runs with two strike outs. Keegan Franklin registered his first career save tossing the final two innings without allowing a hit.

The Roos are scheduled to play Ursinus in a single nine-inning game on Wednesday at 12:30 PM at Ebbets Field.
