Canton, NY – Head Men's Hockey Coach
Alex Boak announced the addition of former Ferris State Assistant Coach Vincent Pietrangelo to his coaching staff.
Pietrangelo joins the Roos after serving as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at NCAA Division I Ferris State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) during the 2015-16 season. Pietrangelo will serve as an assistant coach at SUNY Canton.
"Vince has great experience after spending three years playing at the Division III level with Finlandia University and starting his coaching career with Ferris State as a volunteer last year," Boak said. "Vince will bring a huge knowledge base of how to run a successful program as well as recruiting quality players after learning from Coach Bob Daniels this past year. In the interview process Vince showed the passion and drive that I was looking for in an assistant coach to help with all aspects of the game and most importantly recruiting."
"Playing NCAA D-III hockey at Finlandia University gives me a good grasp of what to expect at the D-III level," Pietrangelo said. "Being a student-athlete before, I am able to relate to the players and understand what they are going through both on and off the ice. My time at Ferris State last season has tremendously prepared me for this position as I was able to learn under one of most well respected coaching staffs in all of college hockey."
The Bulldogs finished the season 20-15-6 as they captured their first ever conference tournament championship with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota State. The team earned a 5-4 overtime win against St. Cloud State in the NCAA West Regional before falling to Denver in the Regional Final.
Prior to his time with Ferris State Pietrangelo was an Associate Head Coach for the Big Rapids High School hockey team last season under former Ferris State Assistant Coach Tim Blashill.
He was also nominated as Head Coach for Team North of the Meijer State Games of Michigan during the summers of 2015 and 2016 and guided the squad to the bronze medal game in 2015 and a 2-2 record in 2016.
A native of Traverse City, MI, Pietrangelo spent the 2013-2014 season as an Assistant at Big Rapids High School. He initially started coaching during the 2012-2013 year for Houghton High School in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, helping them to titles in both the Lake Superior Conference and Region.
During his playing career, Pietrangelo suited up for Division III Finlandia University of the NCHA, located in Hancock, MI. The defenseman played three seasons for Finlandia before retiring due to injury.
Pietrangelo played in 36 career collegiate games for the Lions. He also played junior hockey for the Metro Jets of the CSHL. In three years of high school hockey with Traverse City West High School, Pietrangelo led his school to three straight Big North Conference championships.
Pietrangelo is a 2015 graduate of Ferris State University with a Bachelor's degree in Health Care Services Administration.
"I am excited to work with Coach Boak and continue to build on the momentum from the past few years of Roos hockey," Pietrangelo added.
