Miller’s Heroics, Pollock’s First Career Goal Push Roos to 2-1 Senior Night Victory over Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – Trey Miller made 35 saves on 36 shots, Dylan Pollock scored his first career goal which turned out to be a game-winner in the third period, and the SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a 2-1 victory on senior night over the Plattsburgh Cardinals at Terry Martin Ice Arena.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 2, Plattsburgh 1
  • Location: Terry Martin Ice Arena – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (12-12-1, 8-9-1 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (13-12-0, 9-9-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got on the power play for the first time about a third of the way through the first period. Then, 23 seconds into the man-advantage, the Cardinals were called for a cross-checking, and the Roos had nearly a minute-and-a-half of 5v3.
  • Plattsburgh did a great job on the penalty kill, keeping SUNY Canton without an extremely high danger shot on the two-man-advantage.
  • However immediately after both penalties expired, Logan Kelly was skating with it along the left faceoff dot and saw an opening and took advantage. The sophomore flicked a shot high glove side and into the back of the net for the first goal of the game with 9:59 left in the first period.
  • The Roos had two missed shots on pipe in the first period and ended the first 20 minutes with their one-goal lead.
  • The Cardinals got on the power play six minutes into the second period, and despite no shots on net nearly the entire way through, with 11 seconds left, they ended up tying the game at one off the stick of Jake Sacratini's nice snapshot.
  • The second period concluded with a 1-1 tie while the Cardinals had a significant shots on goal advantage 26-11.
  • With just under nine minutes remaining in the third, the Roos cleared the zone and came up with speed down the ice. William Forsberg had the puck along the near side boards and passed it to Nolan Zotter who was coming down into the low slot. Zotter over skated the puck, but got a stick on it, tipping it to Pollock who was right behind him. Pollock fired a one-timer wide open in the low slot and put it past Beau Lane for the goal to push the game to 2-1.
  • The Cardinals turned on the burners after giving up the second goal, putting plenty of pressure on the Roos, including a near-goal with a shot by Joshua Belgrave that hit the pipe with 4:38 left.
  • Plattsburgh pulled Lane with 1:47 left in the game and had a few great chances including another shot that hit the pipe with 35 seconds left, but despite all the zone time, and the Roos not having a good look at the empty net, SUNY Canton survived to gain their 12th win of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Six different players had a point in the win with Pollock and Kelly scoring the goals and Scott Cremen, Spencer Sasenbury, Forsberg, and Zotter all logging assists. Pollock's goal was his first of his career.
  • Sacratini scored the only goal for Plattsburgh while Spencer Bellina and Brannon Bulter earned the apples on the play.
  • After 60 minutes, shots on goal ended 36-20 in favor of the visitors. The Roos were 0-for-4 on the power play while the Cardinals finished 1-for-5.
  • Miller finished with 35 saves on 36 shots for the Roos (.972 save percentage) while Lane was 18-for-20 in his loss for Plattsburgh.
