Kelly Ties Game Late, Miller Stops 43 Against Thoroughbreds

Canton, NY – Sophomore Logan Kelly scored the game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and junior Trey Miller made 43 saves, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime contest to the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Skidmore 4, SUNY Canton 3 OT
  • Location: Terry Martin Rink – Canton, NY
  • Records: Skidmore (13-9-2, 10-6-1 SUNYAC) | SUNY Canton (11-12-1, 7-9-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ryan Stratton got Skidmore on the board early, banging home a rebound to put the Thoroughbreds up 1-0 just 2:38 into the first period.
  • Cooper Rice doubled his team's lead less than four minutes later, poking the puck home on a power play opportunity.
  • Freshman Colton Alexander got the Roos within one, sniping a shot from the dot over goaltender Tommy Aitken's shoulder at 16:39 of the first. The goal was scored on the power play and was assisted by junior Niko Schoner and senior Scott Cremen.
  • Stratton found the back of the net again with just 16 seconds remaining in the first, but the Roos would not go quietly to the locker room as sophomore Brayden Fryfogle batted in a puck off the end boards just five seconds later to close the gap to 3-2 after one.
  • The score would not change through the second period and deep into the third.
  • With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Coach Alex Boak pulled Miller in favor of the extra attacker and Cremen set up Alexander with a perfect pass for a slap shot that beat Aitken and tied the game at 3-3.
  • The two teams headed to overtime and Canton had several opportunities to score but it was Skidmore who cashed in with Stratton completing the hat trick and closing out the game 4-3 in favor of the Thoroughbreds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Senior Reilly McKinnon led the Roos with five blocked shots and played in his 100th consecutive game and is just two short of the all-time record for the Roos which is held by Josh Sova '18.
  • The Roos were 1-1 on the power play, Skidmore finished 1/4 with the man advantage.
  • Canton had an edge at the faceoff dot, winning 37 of 67 draws.  Freshman Spencer Sasenbury led the way with 17 wins.
  • Kelly leads all goal scorers this season, notching his 11th against Skidmore.
  • Cremen and junior Niko Schoner both recorded two assists.  Schoner leads the Roos with 24 points.
  • Miller's 43 saves ties a season-high, recording the same amount in games against Hobart and Plattsburgh earlier this year.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos host Plattsburgh tomorrow, Saturday, February 21st at 7 p.m. and will celebrate their senior prior to the game.
