Miller Makes 30 Saves, Roos Blanked by Red Dragons in SUNYAC Men’s Hockey Quarterfinal

Cortland, NY – Trey Miller closed out arguably the best season of a Roos goalie in the D-III era with a 30-save night, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team concluded their season with a 2-0 loss at Cortland in the SUNYAC Quarterfinal Round Wednesday night.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Cortland 2, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Alumni Arena – Cortland, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (12-13-1, 8-9-1 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (14-11-1, 10-7-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Dragons placed five shots on net in the first six minutes, but then SUNY Canton got on the power play with 13 minutes remaining in the first period.
  • The man-advantage generated shots by Logan Kelly, then two on net by Evan Pringle, and one by Colton Alexander that was blocked and the Roos failed to score.
  • With three minutes left to play, SUNY Canton was called for their first penalty, but the Roos penalty kill which entered the night at nearly 90%, held the Red Dragons to just one shot.
  • The first period ended in a scoreless tie and the Red Dragons enjoying a 14-6 shots on goal advantage.
  • With seven minutes left in the second period, Dylan Pollock fed Nolan Zotter at the blue line and Zotter beat the defense to get a quick shot off in a mini-breakaway but it ringed off the post for the Roos closest chance yet.
  • Canton fended off a long stretch in the defensive zone in the final minute and kept the game at 0-0 at the end of the period. Shots on net were a bit closer in the second period, but Cortland was nearly doubling up the Roos 25-13.
  • Around halfway through the third period, SUNY Canton found themselves pinned back in their zone for quite a while and after a clean faceoff win, the Red Dragons worked the puck inside and eventually, Sam Christiano snuck one through for the game's first goal with just 9:10 remaining.
  • Moving ahead to just two minutes remaining, Riley McKinnon took a shot that was blocked and the Red Dragons raced down the opposite end of the ice.
  • Cortland had a little 2v1 heading towards Miller and a nice pass by Jack Martin to Thomas Rockey gave Rockey an opportunity to cash in and he did just that to make the game 2-0 with 1:52 left to go.
  • The visitors won the resulting center ice face-off and immediately pulled Miller. The Roos had a couple nice looks in the next minute by Alexander and Kelly but the Red Dragons got into the shooting lanes for blocked shots.
  • SUNY Canton got set up in the attacking zone again in the final minute, but could not get any high danger shots off, eventually falling 2-0 to the Red Dragons to wrap up the 2025-26 campaign.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Six different players recorded points for Cortland, all of which were underclassmen. Rockey and Christiano recorded the two goals.
  • Shots on net finished 32-18 Cortland. Each team was 0-for-1 on the power play with the only two penalties of the game coming in the first period.
  • Miller finished with a very strong performance, going 30-for-32 in between the pipes for SUNY Canton. Nolan Suggs became the first goaltender to blank the Roos since November in his 18-save shutout victory.
  • Scott Cremen his career with 18 points in his senior season. The Maryland native will graduate with the 7th-most points (52) and the 3rd-most assists (43) in D-III history of the program, also tying a school record with 16 assists in a season during 2025-26.
  • Evan Pringle's fantastic career came to a close as well. Pringle is currently fifth in D-III history with 64 points, fourth with 28 goals, and sixth with 34 assists.
  • Another key senior was Reilly McKinnon with the captain earning himself a place in the record books recently with 27 career assists, good for 10th all time. His best achievement, however, is playing 102 games consecutively, joining Josh Sova (2014-18) as the only other player to accomplish that feat.
  • Also dressed for the game were senior goaltenders Nate Hopkins and Kelson Hooper. Hopkins finishes his career with 764 total saves and a 3.59 goals against average. His best season came last year where he was 5th all-time in saves (433), recorded a .910 save percentage, and a 3.02 goals against average. That season, the Rhode Islander joined a list of only two other goalies to record multiple shutouts in a single season.
  • Hooper wraps up his four years with the 2nd-most saves all-time (1159), a .902 save percentage, and a 3.46 goals against average.
