Castleton, VT – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team was down just one goal to Castleton State at halftime, but the host Spartans outscored the Roos 5-0 in the third quarter en route to an 11-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Castleton State, who was an NCAA Tournament team in 2013, got on the board late in the first quarter as Sean Paradis found the back of the net. Just over a minute into the second frame Evan Tucker made it 2-0 Spartans.
Jason Thompson (Massena, NY), who led the Roos with 23 goals in 2013, netted his first marker of 2014 with 1:10 left before half in a man-up situation. Despite Castleton outshooting the Roos 24-16 in the opening half SUNY Canton was within 2-1 at break in a low scoring first half.
The Spartans took control of the game in the third quarter holding a 9-2 shots on goal edge, which led to a 5-0 advantage on the scoreboard. Zach Davidson scored two goals while Alex Green had a goal and assist in the period.
The Roos added goals from
Ryan Cardiff (Albany, NY) and
Garrett DiTullio (Potsdam, NY) in the fourth quarter, while
Trevor Wight (Tierra Verde, FL) picked up an assist. Four tallies in the final frame for the Spartans led to the 11-3 final.
Castleton held a 12-5 advantage in the face-off circle, while both teams went 1-for-9 with the extra attacker.
Corey Spuck (Rochester, NY) made 14 saves in 52 minutes of action, while
Dylan Dix (Rochester, NY) stopped one shot over the final eight minutes of play. Peter Latulippe turned aside 13 shots in the win for the Spartans.
