Box Score
Milton, MA -- Junior
Morgan Barr (Almonte, ON) set a new career best with 44 saves but the men's hockey team couldn't quite complete the comeback, falling 4-2 Sunday evening to host Curry College.
The hosts got on the board first at 12:29 of the first when Brandon Gilmore netted his team-leading fifth score of the season. The Colonels (3-8-2) took the 1-0 lead into the locker room. Barr turned aside 13 first period shots for SUNY Canton (3-12-1).
At the 12:44 mark of the second with the Roos on the power play
J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, NJ) lit the lamp for the third time this season off passes from
Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) and
Sam McLaughlin (Ottawa, ON) to even the score at 1-1. Lafferty took a slap shot outside the corner of the net that went over the shoulder of Curry goaltender Derek Mohney. Just 16 seconds later Curry responded with a Tommy Tsicos score off passes from Shane Harrington and Dominic Puntillo.
The Colonels added an important insurance marker 5:52 into the third when Frankie Posillico scored on the power play off passes from Tyler Vankleef and Sean Nelson. SUNY Canton responded at the 15:33 mark when
Nick Vasilopoulos (Montreal, QC) scored his second career goal to get the team within 3-2. The Roos pulled Barr with less than two minutes remaining and Curry added an empty net goal for the 4-2 final.
Barr established a new career-high in saves surpassing his previous mark of 43 saves, which he did on two separate occasions last season. Mohney made 35 stops for the Colonels. Lafferty led the Roos with five shots on goal, while Vasilopoulos, Giczewski and Schneider each challenged Mohney four times.
The men's hockey team is back in action Friday at 7:00 p.m. when it travels to take on Morrisville State College before returning home Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Johnson & Wales University. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
