Women’s Volleyball off to Best Start in Program History at 9-1

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team disposed of both Paul Smith's College and Johnson State College winning both matches in straight sets Saturday afternoon at the Roos House. The Kangaroos (9-1) defeated the Bobcats, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-11), before downing the Badgers 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-14).

The 9-1 start to the season is the best in the program's three-year history. Last year's team started the season 7-1, which was the previous best mark. After falling to 7-2, the 2012 squad rattled off 18 consecutive victories to stand at 25-2. The 2013 Roos will look to continue that success.

In its first match of the day against Paul Smith's SUNY Canton used 10 kills to earn the first set victory, 25-14. Numerous players saw time as 12 different Roos clocked time on the floor. The second and third frames continued to be controlled by the hosts as they combined to outscore the Bobcats, 50-23 in the second and third frames.

Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) and Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) led SUNY Canton with six and five kills, respectively. Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) recorded four kills hitting .333, while Brianna Enge (Auburn, NY) led all players with a match-high 12 digs to go with two kills. Kiana Archer (Plattsburgh, NY) set up a match-high 15 assists coupled with seven digs and two kills. Julia Bradley (Tupper Lake, NY) was effective from the service line pinpointing a match-high four aces.

The Roos were equally as successful in their second match of the day handling visiting Johnson State in straight sets. The Badgers were outmatched from the start scoring just six points in the opening set loss. SUNY Canton spread the court and got everyone involved closing out the final two sets, 25-10 and 25-14.

Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) spearheaded the attack with six kills, Wicks notched a career-best five kills and both players finished with .500 hitting percentages. Bills and Rachel Lowther (Woodridge, VA) floored four kills apiece, as they hit .667 on their attack attempts. Archer finished with a team-high six service aces, while Enge added five of her own. Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) tallied a match-high 13 assists.

The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team returns to action Saturday when it travels to Castleton, VT.  The Roos take on Green Mountain College at 11:00 a.m. before a 1:00 p.m. match-up with host Castleton State.
