Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team proved to be a fine-tuned machine on the opening day of the 2013 season as they were the only team to go 2-0, earning victories over SUNY Institute of Technology and Oswego State Friday afternoon at the Roos House. The Kangaroos swept the Wildcats 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-19) before ousting the visiting Lakers 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20).

SUNY Canton got out to a 12-8 lead early on in the first set in its opening match against SUNYIT by spreading the floor and playing tough defense. The visiting Wildcats closed the score to 18-18 before taking a 19-18 lead. Following a Roo timeout, SUNY Canton responded scoring the next four points and closed out the first set, 25-23 on a Mackenzie Mynter kill. The hosts had 19 kills compared to only six errors in the first frame.

The Roos took a slim, 11-9 edge partway through the second frame opened the gap using an 8-1 spurt to take a commanding 19-12 advantage. SUNY Canton continued to control play down the stretch and Mynter finished off the second set much like the first, but this time with a service ace.

The third frame was tied at 15 all, but SUNY Canton used six consecutive points including two long rallies with impressive defensive effort to take a 21-15 lead. Minutes later they closed out the set and match, 25-19. The Roos were extremely impressive tallying 17 kills in the third set and finished the match with a remarkable .333 team hitting percentage.

Three different Roos paced the attack finishing with double digit kills. Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) registered a match-high 11 kills, while Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) and Lindsay Bryer recorded 10 kills apiece. Cornish was also impressive defensively tying fellow teammate Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) with a match-high 16 digs. Mynter proved to be the catalyst offensively finishing with a match-high 35 assists.

SUNY Canton had another strong outing in its second match of the day against a solid opponent in Oswego State. The Roos pulled away late in the first set to prevail, 25-18. In set two the Lakers had game point at 24-23 but the Roos battled to win a point at net to make it 24 all. Oswego State responded with a kill and a SUNY Canton tip over the right side of net came up just wide as the Lakers took the second frame, 26-24.

The Roos battled back in the third using crisp passing and quick movement to get out to a 21-15 edge that propelled them to a 25-16 victory. SUNY Canton proved strong in the fourth set as they closed out Oswego State, 25-20, for the four-set win.

Cornish and Bryer were forces once again tallying 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Cornish, Bryer and Carroll combined for a remarkable 40 digs as they locked down the Roo defense. Mynter was a jumpstart offensively dishing out a match-high 44 assists.

SUNY Canton starts its season 2-0 as the only team to go undefeated on day one of the invitational. The Roos are back on the court tomorrow when they host Wells College at 4:00 p.m. in the Roos House.
