Canton, NY – The men's hockey team gave up three third period goals as they fell to visiting Southern New Hampshire University, 5-3, Saturday evening at the Roos House. The win improves the Penmen to 4-1-0, while the loss drops SUNY Canton to 1-4-1.
The hosts seized the momentum from the start when just 18 seconds in
Lee Melde (Proctor, MN) tallied his first goal as a Roo beating Southern New Hampshire net minder Dave Letarte over his blocker for the 1-0 lead.
Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, NY) and
Dave Ferris (Saratoga Springs, NY) tallied assists on the play. The Penmen wasted no time responding with a score of their own just 32 seconds later. Dane Caracino fed John Humphrey for the goal.
SUNY Canton added its second score of the game at the 7:54 mark when
Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) found the back of the net for the second time this season off passes from
Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) and
Vance Bridgman (North Pole, AK). Three minutes later the Penmen responded with a power play goal to make it 2-2. In what was an action filled first period
Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, CA) added his second marker of the year to give the Roos a 3-2 lead after the first.
Jake Ranahan (Grapevine, TX) was credited with an assist on the score.
The hosts dominated the scoring chances in the second period outshooting the Penmen 11-5 but neither team was able to get on the board as the Roos led 3-2 after the second frame.
Southern New Hampshire added three goals in the third period including an empty-netter to earn the 5-3 victory.
Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) stopped 18 shots for the Roos, while Letarte turned aside 26 shots for the Penmen.
