Schneider Earns Lone Roo Tally on Northmen Night

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Southern New Hampshire University Friday evening at the Roos House on Northmen Night as more than 100 alumni, family and friends visited campus on Terry Martin Weekend. The win improves the Penmen to 3-1-0, while the loss drops the Roos to 1-3-1.
 
The visitors got on the scoreboard first 15:06 into the first period with the skater advantage. Dane Caracino fed the puck to Casey Goll at the point where he fired a shot toward goal that was redirected out in front by Joe Collins who beat Roo goaltender Christopher Marsillo (Lincroft, NJ) for the 1-0 lead. SUNY Canton held a 10-7 shots on goal advantage after one as they earned a second power play of their own near the end of the opening period.
 
The Penmen extended their lead to 2-0 12:28 into the second frame when they once again capitalized with their power play unit. This time it was Caracino finding the back of the net off passes from Goll and Collins. Southern New Hampshire would open up a three goal advantage three minutes later when Jay Sylvia netted his first goal of the season with Steven Berry earning the assist on the play.
 
SUNY Canton would bring the deficit within two at the 17:24 mark when Justin Brooks (Aurora, ONT) and Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) assisted Dave Schneider's (Indianapolis, IN) second score of the season to make it 3-1. The teams went to the second intermission with Southern New Hampshire holding a two-goal lead despite the Roos outshooting the Penmen 19-16.
 
After the teams skated 4-on-4 to start the second period the Penmen were able to capitalize with the extra skater for the third time on the evening when Collins netted his second power play marker and seventh goal of the season to make it 4-1. Southern New Hampshire would add two more goals within a 45 second span, one coming short-handed for the 6-1 final.
 
Marsillo made the start in net for SUNY Canton making 13 saves over 43:19, while Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) replaced him turning aside 12 shots in the final 16:41. Tyler Holske stopped 21 shots in the win for the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire finished with a 31-22 shots on goal edge in large part to a 15-3 advantage in the final period. SUNY Canton held a slight 34-33 edge in faceoffs.
