Roos Use Thrilling Comeback to Go Undefeated on Day 1 at Highlander Invitational

Houghton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team came from one set down in its final match of the day to cap off a 2-0 day defeating the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Hilbert College Friday evening in the Highlander Invitational. The Kangaroos (26-4) swept the Wolverines, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) before ousting the Hawks, 3-2 (25-14, 24-26, 24-26 25-19, 15-2).

The Roos took care of business in its opening match against an unfamiliar opponent in Michigan-Dearborn. SUNY Canton dominated play from the start, using 10 kills to easily take the opening frame, 25-15. The team improved its hitting percentage to .222 in a 25-21 second set victory. The Roos closed out the match in straight sets taking the third stanza, 25-18.

Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) put down nine balls in 23 attempts to go with her seven digs. Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) and Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ONT) each floored six kills while Reynolds added three service aces and Bills contributed four blocks at net. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) dished out 28 assists and added five digs and three blocks, while Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) floored five of her seven attack attempts in addition to pinpointing three service aces and digging up five balls. Emily Thomas (Horseheads, NY) finished the match with six digs.

SUNY Canton's second match of the day proved to be a thriller between two evenly matched squads. The Roos used a match-best 12 kills to cruise to a 25-14 opening set victory. The second and third sets were battles back-and-forth but Hilbert showed their mental toughness as they prevailed by identical scores of 26-24. Trailing two sets to one SUNY Canton dug deep and produced a 25-19 fourth set victory. The Roos siezed the momentum and dismantled the Hawks, 15-2, in the deciding fifth set.

Cornish
Bills slammed home 12 kills, her second highest production in that category on the season, as she hit a remarkably accurate .440 on 25 attack attempts and had four blocks. Cornish was instrumental for SUNY Canton as she tallied a career-high 11 service aces to go with her 12 digs and seven kills. Reynolds added nine kills, while Mynter recorded her third double-double of the season with 35 assists and 10 digs and Bryer notched nine digs and seven kills. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ONT) finished with nine digs from her libero position.

The women's volleyball team is back in action Saturday at the Highlander Invitational when they take on Alfred State College at 10:00 a.m. before a 2:00 p.m. tilt with Lycoming College.
