(Rochester, N.Y.)- The top-seeded SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team was upset by No. 2 Robert Morris 4-3 Sunday morning in overtime in the championship game of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League tournament. The Roos saw their nine-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 19-11.
SUNY Canton still moves on to ACHA Division I national championship by winning the ECHL regular season title.
The Roos also went to overtime in the semifinals on Saturday as they rallied to beat No. 6 Syracuse 4-3.
On Sunday SUNY Canton had to claw their way back after falling behind 2-0 into the second period.
Mark Talamo (Oswego, N.Y.) scored a short-handed goal at the 15:02 mark of the second period starting a run of three straight goals by SUNY Canton. Talamo scored again as did
John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) during that stretch.
Luke Bennett tied the game for the Colonials 4:28 into the third period and then he won for Robert Morris with 5:22 left in the first overtime.
Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) stopped 46 of 50 shots and Brent Baburinch had 46 saves for the Colonials.
