(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team captured the third-place trophy of the Terry Martin / Pride's Corner Tournament for the second year in a row as they buried Cornell University 11-2 at the Canton Pavilion on Sunday.
Similar to what they did in Saturday's game against Oswego, SUNY Canton jumped out to a 3-0 lead but this time held the lead and continued to pour it on for another convincing win.
The Roos, who improved to 15-3, out shot the Big Red 25-9 over the first two periods as they build a dominating 8-0 lead. The lead grew to 9-0 before Cornell finally got on the board with a power play goal three minutes into the third period. The Roos banged in two more scores down the stretch in the third and killed off a five-on-three Cornell advantage and a five-minute major that was assessed in the final period.
Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) was named to the all-tournament team after he recorded one goal and three assists against Cornell. Liggio also scored against Oswego.
Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) also had a goal and three assists on Sunday.
Eight other players scored at least onece led by
Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario) who scored twice and set up two other tallies.
Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) scored a nice unassisted, shorthanded goal and added one assist.
John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) also had a goal and an assist and
Garrett Rosenbaum (Charleston, S.C.), who joined Liggio on the all-tournament team,
Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.),
Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.),
Doug Burns (Manchester, N.H.), and
Dan Cibelli (Liverpool, N.Y.) also scored.
Cory Bercume (Potsdam, N.Y.) had three assists and
Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) made 19 saves.
Lane Fraum and Cameron Nickels each scored for Cornell and Chris Hogan had 25 saves.
Oswego State won the championship beating John Carroll University 4-3. Mike Renick of Oswego State was named the Most Valuable Player. The rest of the all-tournament team consisted of goalie Anthony Sellitti and forward Chris Covel of Oswego and defenseman John O'Brien and forward Nick Morici of John Carroll.
