Castleton, VT – Freshman Adam Sabatini and sophomore Brielle Smith paced the SUNY Canton men's and women's cross country teams at their season-opening race at the VTSU Castleton Invitational on Saturday morning in Vermont.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Sabatini covered the 5-kilometer course in 20:28 in his collegiate debut, averaging a 6:35 mile, to finish in 39th place out of 52 racers. Justin Escudero wasn't far behind crossing the line in 20:48 (41st place).
• Aiden Bartlett (21:25), Wyatt Beers (21:59) and Justin Bormann (22:45) rounded out the top five scoring runners for the Roos.
• Canton finished in sixth place out of the six team field with 167 points, just behind host Castleton (138). Keene State won the team title with 28 points edging out Eastern Connecticut State (42).
• Albert Ferreras from UMass Boston won the individual race (16:41) ahead of Keene State's Griffin Urnezis (16:44).

• Smith led the Canton women covering the 5K course in 25:12 (8:06/mile) to finish in 33rd place out of 43 competitors.
• Kylie Rivera (34:20), Sydney Pelerin (35:59) and Sophie Seltzer (37:23) rounded out those running for the Roos.
• Canton competed individually and did not record a team score as five runners are required for team scores in cross country.
• Keene State won the team title with 33 points ahead of Eastern Connecticut State (51) and UMass Boston (56).
• Keene State's Kallie Warner won the individual race (20:28) by 38 seconds.
