Dunn & LaShomb Score Four Each as Roos Battle Red Dragons

Canton, NY – Sydney Dunn and Hailey LaShomb scored four goals each but visiting Oneonta used a strong second half to earn a 17-12 SUNYAC win in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oneonta got on the board first less than a minute in off the stick of Angelina Weinert. The Roos answered with back-to-back tallies from Ava Bodnar and LaShomb. Kate Whitley and Megan Montgomery assisted on the two markers, respectively.
  • The teams exchanged three goals each the rest of the first quarter with Bodnar scoring again and Dunn netting a pair. The Roos held a 5-4 lead after the opening frame.
  • Weinert scored the opening goal of the second stanza, but Canton rattled off three straight from LaShomb, Caroline Nappi and Dunn to take an 8-5 lead. The Red Dragons scored with a little over two minutes remaining to cut the Canton lead to 8-6 at intermission.
  • Oneonta outscored Canton 2-0 in a low scoring third quarter to knot things at eight apiece after 45 minutes. The Re Dragons extended their consecutive goal streak to six with the first three goals of the fourth quarter opening and 11-8 advantage.
  • LaShomb caged back-to-back goals to get the hosts within 11-10. After another Oneonta goal Canton was whistled for a yellow card, and the Red Dragons made them pay netting three straight player advantage goals on the two-minute unreleasable penalty.
  • The Red Dragons added two more goals to open their advantage to seven (17-10) before Dunn and Bodnar added a pair of late Canton goals for the 17-12 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Dunn led the Roos with four goals and one assist, while LaShomb scored four times. Nappi recorded a game-high four assists and scored once, while Bodnar registered three goals. Kate Whitley tied a game-best with six draw controls and added two ground balls. LaShomb picked up five draw controls and Sara Aldous had four. Kenadie Garrow chipped in tying a game-high with three caused turnovers. The four goals marked a new career-best for LaShomb.
  • Weinert paced Cortland with five goals, while Emily McIntee scored four. Ava Fitzsimons tallied game-highs of six draw controls and four ground balls.
  • Oneonta held the upper hand in shots on goal (30-23), ground balls (23-18) and draw controls (16-15). The Red Dragons were 5-for-8 on free-position shots and 14-for-22 on clears. Canton was 2-for-4 and 15-for-19, respectively.
  • Ava Berkowitz stopped two shots allowing five goals in the first quarter, while Margot Haring turned aside nine shots surrendering seven goals over the final three quarters to earn the win for Cortland. Laura Falandys made 13 saves in the loss.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos have a quick turnaround as they host Clarkson in non-conference action on Monday at 4 p.m.
