Bodnar and Dunn Score Twice, Aldous Nets First Collegiate Goal against Buffalo State

Buffalo, NY – Ava Bodnar and Sydney Dunn both found the back of the net twice and Sara Aldous scored her first collegiate goal, but the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-7 decision to the Buffalo State Bengals Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Buffalo State 15, SUNY Canton 7
  • Location: Coyer Field – Buffalo, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (3-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) | Buffalo State (7-2, 2-0 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos maintained possession early and got on the board first with a free-position goal from Sienna Hillicke.
  • Bodnar scored not long after, but the final two goals of the first period belonged to the Bengals, and the game was tied at 2 after 15 minutes.
  • After Buffalo State was a bit sloppy to begin the game, the Bengals cleaned it up towards the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second. Buffalo State was rolling and scored their seventh unanswered goal with 6:24 left in the first half.
  • Caroline Nappi stopped the bleeding only twenty seconds after, and then Dunn put one in later in the period, but the Roos were down 9-4 at the half.
  • Buffalo State scored four more times in the third period, while holding the Roos without a goal. Dunn had two shots on goal and Hillicke had one in the third quarter, but goaltender Moira Penot made some great saves on all of those plays as the Roos trailed 13-4 heading into the final stanza.
  • SUNY Canton scored the first goal of the second period, with Hailey LaShomb finding Bodnar who cut in front from behind the net and scored.
  • Aldous made some nice moves in front of the net, and scored her first of the season later, forcing a timeout out of the Bengals.
  • The Roos did a great job forcing turnovers and keeping the ball away from their net in the quarter, and with just under five minutes left, Dunn scored the third unanswered goal to make it 13-7.
  • Unfortunately though, the deficit was a bit too large for the Roos, and despite outscoring Buffalo State 3-2 in the fourth quarter, the Roos dropped the contest 15-7.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bodnar led SUNY Canton with three points off two goals plus an assist while Dunn scored a pair and Nappi put one in and assisted on another. In addition to scoring her first goal, Aldous also had a ground ball, two caused turnovers, and a team-high three draw controls.
  • Only four Buffalo State players accounted for the 15 goals, and that included a team-best five from Emilee Josker. Vanessa Willick had four goals, three caused turnovers, and seven draw control wins.
  • Shots on net were 16-14 in favor of the Bengals. However, Buffalo State won plenty more draw controls (15-9) and were 15-for-21 on clears, while the Roos were just 15-for-28.
  • Laura Falandys made three saves in the loss and Mikela Montes, who entered in during the fourth quarter stopped one. Penot was very good for Buffalo State with 10 saves on 17 shots faced.
