Throggs Neck, NY – Katlyn Hart (Harrisville, NY) netted her team-leading sixth and seventh goals of the season including the overtime winner as the SUNY Canton women's soccer team defeated host SUNY Maritime, 4-3, Sunday afternoon. The win propels the Kangaroos above .500 at 5-4, while the loss drops the Privateers to 7-4.
The Roos dictated play in the first half outshooting Maritime 14-8 including a 9-5 shots on goal advantage. SUNY Canton got on the board first in the 23rd minute when
Franchesca Trombley (Dekalb Junction, NY) played a long pass in from the wing to Hart who beat Privateer keeper Kristen Hoar from the center of the box.
Jorrie Trenkamp tallied back-to-back unassisted scores in a six-minute span for the hosts as she turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead for Maritime. The first score came when she dodged around three Roo defenders and keeper
Brittany Rotach (Brasher Falls, NY) for a soft touch into the goal. Trenkamp's second marker came when she streaked down the left wing and broke free of the defense for the score.
Despite SUNY Canton controlling a majority of the half the Privateers took a 2-1 edge on the scoreboard into intermission.
The Roos dictated the pace of play to open the second frame challenging Hoar with five shots on target in the opening 18 minutes. Those efforts paid off when SUNY Canton found the equalizer in the 63rd minute.
Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) delivered a free kick off a set piece and found a cutting
Jade Sayward (Willsboro, NY) who redirected a header into the corner of the net past a diving Hoar for her second score in as many games.
SUNY Canton's constant pressure on the offensive side of the ball paid off just 34 seconds later.
lexandra Forsythe (Lakeland, NY) recorded her first collegiate goal breaking free of the Privateer defense to find the back of the net and shift the momentum completing in favor of the visitors.
Maritime continued to battle trying to find the game-tying goal and Trenkamp came through for the hosts when she recorded a hat trick tallying her third score of the contest in the 78th minute. After the Privateers earned a free kick Leanne Lavelle took the kick finding Trenkamp eight yards out who redirected the shot with her head to knot the game at three.
Trombley tested Hoar forcing the keeper to make two saves in the final 2:35 but the Privateer net minder made both stops as the teams would continue into sudden death overtime. The Roos dominated the second stanza as they held huge advantages in shots (17-5) and shots on goal (12-1).
The Roos continued to wear down the Privateer defense to begin the overtime period. After two early corner kicks Cree had a shot 7:24 into the extra period from point blank range but Hoar made a leaping save to stifle the scoring opportunity. Just 35 seconds later Cree proved to be the catalyst for the game-winner. She drilled a corner kick to the far post where Hart shot the ball towards the opposite post for the game-winning goal.
SUNY Canton outshot Maritime 33-13 in the contest including a 23-6 shots on goal margin. The Roos had a 7-5 corner kicks edge including a distinct 3-0 advantage in the overtime period. Rotach stopped three shots in her fifth win of the season, while Hoar made 19 saves for the Privateers.
The SUNY Canton women's soccer team returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Amherst, NY to take on Daemen College beginning at 7:30 p.m.
