Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton women's soccer team was unable to get on the board as it fell Wednesday evening, 2-0, to host SUNY Potsdam in the fourth annual Boyd Jones Cup. The win improves the Bears to 3-4-1, while the loss drops the Kangaroos to 3-4-0.
The hosts got on the board first in the sixth minute off a set piece from 30 yards out. Kristin Webster took the free kick and the ball snuck between the legs of Roo keeper
Brittany Rotach (Brasher Falls, NY) for the early 1-0 lead. The Bears tacked on another score in the 22nd minute when Kate Clauss collected the ball in the Potsdam offensive third after a SUNY Canton turnover. She played a quick pass to Kaylen Van Wagner who drilled a shot into the right side netting to make it 2-0 in favor of the hosts.
SUNY Potsdam controlled the opening 45 minutes holding the Roos without a shot on net and challenging Rotach seven times in the frame. SUNY Canton showed life after halftime as they controlled play early in the second stanza. The Roos evened up the shots on goal (3-3) in the final 45, but were unable to come away with a goal.
Rotach made eight saves to keep Canton within striking distance, while Lauren Haase stopped three shots for the Bears. With the win Potsdam retains the Jones Cup. This is the fourth season the Bears and Roos have squared off in what is known as the Jones Cup, named after Boyd Jones who was the Sports Information Director both at SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam at different times.
The women's soccer team returns to action Saturday when it takes on The King's College at 2:00 p.m. in New York, NY. The Roos have a quick turnaround as they square off at SUNY Maritime on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m.
