Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team outshot host Clarkson University 15-14 in the contest but were unable to make their chances count falling, 3-0, Wednesday evening. The win improves the Golden Knights to 2-5, while the loss drops the Kangaroos to 3-5.
The Roos came out of the gate strong putting pressure on the Clarkson defense. Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) tallied the first shot on goal of the contest just 3:22 in but Knight net minder Michael King was up to the task turning aside the shot attempt.
The hosts got on the board first at the 17 minute mark on a SUNY Canton defensive miscue that resulted in an own goal. The ball was played back from the right corner by a defender to keeper Evan Drew (Elizabethtown, NY) who had it bounce off him into the open net. Shots on goal were even at seven apiece but Clarkson took a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard into intermission.
Drew made back-to-back saves out of halftime, but the Knights added their second marker of the game in the 50th minute. Angelo DiFrancesco played the ball up the middle to Brendan Wise who went 1-on-1 with Drew, beating him low and left to make it 2-0.
Eleven minutes into the second frame the Roos had a string of three shots in a minute span but were unable to get on the board. Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezuela) headed the ball just wide, while Tyler Gallagher (Potsdam, NY) missed wide and Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, NY) had his shot attempt saved by King.
Clarkson added an insurance goal in the 78th minute with DiFrancesco setting up the offense once again. He made a pass in the middle to Marco Parisi who dribbled between the defense and placed a shot in the lower left corner past Drew.
Drew stopped six shots in the contest for the Roos, while King made seven saves for the hosts. The SUNY Canton men's soccer team will return to the pitch Friday when it travels to Rutland, VT to take on the College of St. Joseph beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Roos will square off the next day against Vermont Technical College at 3:00 p.m.
