Canton, NY –The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team won both of its matches on the first day of the North Country Classic on Friday. Three Roos set new career highs in the team's match against Keuka College.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
MATCH 1 – BOX SCORE

• Canton and Hilbert found themselves in a tight race to begin the first match of the day as the Hawks took a 9-7 lead early in the first set. A 10-point run for the Roos, including a pair of aces from Olivia Tran, shifted the momentum in Canton's favor. Hilbert's Jordan Austin put the Hawks on the board with a kill before Canton's offensive barrage continued with three consecutive points, putting the Roos up 20-10.  Canton went on to close things out, 25-14, with an ace from Coulter putting the Roos over the edge. 
• Hilbert came out strong to begin set two, finding an 8-1 lead out of the gate. As SUNY Canton battled back, a block shared by Coulter and Abby Raven helped tighten the score, making it a 10-6 contest. The Hawks continued to click offensively, claiming six of the next eight points. A kill from Viv Sieja sparked a 5-1 run for the Roos, shrinking their deficit to 17-13. Hilbert responded with a run of their own, recording six of the next seven scores before eventually closing out the stanza.
• Two consecutive kills from Clara Bond capped off a four-point run for the Roos to kick off the third set. Hilbert soon found their groove offensively as both squads traded scores, finding themselves tied at eight points apiece. Seven of the next eight points were taken by the Roos in a run finished off with a block by Raven and Bond. Staring down a 15-9 deficit, the Hawks dug deep, eventually clawing their way to a 22-21 match. Their efforts fell short as the Roos closed out the third set, 25-23.
• Canton put on an offensive clinic to round out their first match of the day, climbing to a 10-3 advantage early, largely due to four kills from Coulter and three consecutive aces from Rylan Walker. The Hawks were unable to find an answer to Canton's offense, finding themselves down 15-8 as play continued. Six points in a row brought the Roos within four, before eventually closing out the Hawks, 25-14.  

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Coulter led all players on the court with 13 kills in match one while adding eight digs and three aces.
• Kaelyn Boliver topped the stat sheet with 20 assists against the Hawks.
• Walker's seven service aces against Hilbert marks a new career best.
• Bond added eight kills and three digs.

 

MATCH 2 – BOX SCORE

• Canton began their second match picking up right where they left off, coming out to a 9-4 lead after an ace from Madalena Balisciano. As the Hawks fought back, a kill from Nina Scott brought Keuka within two as the scoreboard read 12-10 in Canton's favor. The Roos went on to pull away from the Wolves to the tune of a 21-13 advantage. Canton kept their foot on the gas as they rolled to a 25-16 victory in set one, with Emmi Veras earning the final point with a kill.
• The Wolves displayed grit in the second stanza, leading the Roos 15-12 as the set entered its middle stages. Both squads traded scores before a four-point spree put Canton ahead for the first time since the third rally, 18-17. As both teams fought for control of the scoreboard, it was Keuka who took a 24-23 lead before squeaking out a win in set two.
• The Roos kicked off the third stanza strong as Boliver assisted Coulter to go up 9-6. Both groups continued to trade blows before the Roos found their footing, with kills from Madison Bigelow, Bond, and Coulter putting Canton up, 18-13. Keuka stole seven of the next nine points to even things out at 20 apiece. A 5-1 run from Canton soon closed out the set.  
• The final moments of the match found both teams locked at 20 points apiece. SUNY Canton found a rhythm, finishing off the Wolves with a 5-1 run in the twilight moments of the afternoon's last contest.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Coulter's 20 kills against Keuka marks a new career high for the junior outside hitter, good for the second-most kills in a four-set match in the Roos D-III era.
• Coulter recorded a .529 attack percentage while adding three aces and two assists.
• Balisciano and Boliver accumulated 23 and 22 assists, respectively, marking career highs for the freshman pair.
• Raven tallied 10 kills with a .333 attack percentage.
• The Roos totaled a respectable .297 team attack percentage in their second match.

The North Country Classic continues Saturday at noon at Stan Cohen Court as the Roos square off with VTSU Johnson in their first match of the day.
