Softball Battles Plattsburgh in SUNYAC Action

Canton, NY – Bridgette Fox had two hits in game one, but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped two games to the Plattsburgh Cardinals Sunday afternoon.

Game one was tight early on, but a seven-run seventh inning by the Cardinals pushed the game out of reach as the Roos fell 10-0. In the second game, Plattsburgh scored in spurts, and once again had a blow up inning, scoring 10 in the fifth to earn the sweep with a 17-1 victory in game two.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Game 1: Plattsburgh 10, SUNY Canton 0 | Game 2: Plattsburgh 17, SUNY Canton 1 (5 Inn.)
  • Location: SUNY Canton Softball Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (2-14, 1-5 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (10-11, 4-4 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • SUNY Canton made some nice defensive plays to start the game. In the first inning with a Cardinal on third and nobody out, Madelin Marquart caught a flyball in left and then gunned down the runner trying to tag up and score.
  • Moving into the third, Ava Bouchey made a nice play on an infield hit, throwing out another runner at home to preserve the scoreless tie.
  • The first two innings were scoreless, but the Cardinals plated a couple in the top of the third. Three singles and a double in the frame gave Plattsburgh a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Cardinals tacked on another in the fifth with a single and an RBI double.
  • Moving into the seventh with the game in reach 3-0, that changed in the final inning. The Cardinals hit three doubles to start things off, and the line just kept moving after that. Four more hits in the frame gave the road team seven runs as they went out ahead 10-0.
  • Offense was hard to come by for the Roos throughout the game. Fox had a double in the second and a single in the fourth but was left stranded both times; these were the only two hits SUNY Canton had in the game.
  • Plattsburgh retired the final ten batters in the game to take the first game 10-0.
  • Fox had both hits for the Roos, including a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 2 –  BOX SCORE
  • Plattsburgh broke out the bats early in game two with two runs in the first and then two more in the second.
  • Into the fourth, the Cardinals hit a two-run home run and later scored another in the frame to go up by a touchdown, 7-0.
  • SUNY Canton once again struggled to get the bats going in game two. The Roos went 0-for-9 first time through the order, but Marquart doubled to begin the fourth although the Roos were retired in order after that.
  • The fifth inning was not a pretty one, with ten Plattsburgh runs scoring as the game was busted open 17-0.
  • Ava Bouchey led off the bottom of the fifth with an opposite field double down the line. Sydney Tanner then doubled to put runners on the corners, then Ace Rogers had an RBI sacrifice bunt to put SUNY Canton on the board.
  • However, two strikeouts after Roger's RBI bunt ended the game 17-1 after five innings.
  • Marquart, Bouchey, and Tanner all had hits in game two with Rogers registering an RBI.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will head south to play Buffalo State on Friday, April 17 in a twin bill beginning at 3 p.m.
