Tanner Plus Team Effort Leads Softball to First-Ever SUNYAC Win Against Potsdam

Canton, NY – Sydney Tanner pitched a complete game, only allowing three earned runs, Cassandra Forrest and Bridgette Fox each had two hits, and the SUNY Canton softball team earned their first-ever SUNYAC win in comeback fashion 6-4, splitting with the Bears in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Despite the late comeback in game two, game one was all Bears as they won 11-0 in five innings. SUNY Canton pulled ahead 3-2 to start game two, Potsdam scored two in the top of the sixth to take the lead, then the Roos put three runs on the board in their half of the inning, holding on in the top of the seventh to cap a 6-4 victory.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The first game was all Bears with Potsdam immediately jumping ahead 2-0 after a couple of hits in the first inning.
  • The Roos sent Potsdam down in order in the second, but in the third, Potsdam padded their lead with five more runs in an inning which included a homer and a double to go up 7-0.
  • The Roos recorded four hits through the first three innings, including two by Madelin Marquart, but left all four stranded, unable to cut into the Bears lead.
  • Potsdam scored three more in the fourth and one more in the fifth to get up 11-0. SUNY Canton failed to get a baserunner in the fourth and fifth innings, leading to the premature defeat.
  • Marquart had a nice game at the dish with two hits including a double. Forrest and Tanner both logged singles in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • In an action-packed game two, Potsdam scored first in the second inning, but the Roos responded in bottom of the frame. Emily Hobart and Tanner laced back-to-back singles and Ivy Ostrander reached on an error to pack the bags. Marquart delivered with a single through the left side to score SUNY Canton's first run of the afternoon.
  • The Roos took the lead for the first time in the third inning. Brigette Fox scored on a error as SUNY Canton went out ahead 2-1, then with Hobart on first and Bouchey on third, the two executed a double steal of second and home, and the Roos found themselves ahead 3-1.
  • Potsdam got back into the scoring column in the fifth. A single, a stolen base, and sacrifice bunt, and an RBI groundout got Potsdam within one run with the score now at 3-2.
  • Heading into the top of the sixth inning with a runner on third and one out, Tanner got a huge strikeout of Payton St. Clair, arguably the top hitter for Potsdam. However, the very next batter, Maddalyn Wasserman hit a towering flyball out to left which left the ballpark as the Bears reclaimed the lead 4-3.
  • After two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Potsdam could not find the strike zone, loading the bases on walks. Cassandra Forrest then struck out, but a passed ball gave Forrest first base and Jordyn Tarbox the game-tying run. Fox was then plunked to give the Roos a 5-4 advantage. Bouchey padded the lead even more with a single to cap the three-run inning with the Roos up 6-4.
  • Potsdam was rolling to begin the seventh with back-to-back singles and a steal of second to put the potential game-tying run on second with nobody out.
  • Tanner, still on the mound, froze the next batter with a looking strikeout for a big first out. Then, the following batter sent a line drive into right field. Ivy Ostrander made a nice running catch, then gunned down the runner on second for a thrilling way to get the final out of the game with the doubleplay.
  • Both Fox and Forrest had two hits with Fox having an RBI. Marquart drove in one on a base hit as well, going for three hits across the doubleheader.
  • Tanner got her second win of the season pitching all seven innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, with four punchouts and no walks.
