Bodnar, Whitley Lead Roos Against Pioneers

Aston, PA – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team's young talent shined again, in particular Ava Bodnar and Kate Whitley who had three and two goals, respectively in a 19-8 loss against one of the premier Midwest women's lacrosse programs, the Carroll Pioneers Wednesday afternoon in a neutral site matchup hosted by Neumann University.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Carroll (WI) 19, SUNY Canton 8
  • Location: Neumann University Turf Field – Aston, PA
  • Records: SUNY Canton (2-1) | Carroll (WI) (5-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A team from Wisconsin that made the national tournament last year, the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead only a few minutes in, but then the Roos got on the board with Hailey LaShomb putting one in.
  • However, the rest of the first period was a fairly one-sided match with Carroll getting plenty of high-quality looks on net. The Pioneers scored the final five goals of the first period to go up 7-1.
  • Carroll scored a couple more times to open the scoring in the second quarter, but then Bodnar gave the Roos a boost with a pair of goals to make it 9-3.
  • The rest of the quarter was even with the Roos forcing plenty of turnovers to keep the game within a reasonable margin. After two quarters, the score was 10-3 Carroll with Bodnar having three points with two goals plus an assist.
  • Both teams tallied a pair of goals early in the second half, but the Pioneers dumped on five consecutive goals to put themselves up 17-5.
  • Bodnar scored her third of the game in the closing minute as SUNY Canton was down 17-6 with 15 minutes remaining.
  • Kate Whitley finished strong in the fourth quarter with a pair of goals but the Roos were downed by the Pioneers in their first loss of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bodnar, who had three goals and an assist is now up to eight goals and 13 points on the season, scoring multiple goals in each of the Roos three games so far. Whitley totaled two goals and also had four ground balls and two caused turnovers to top the team in both categories.
  • For the Pioneers, Samantha Hurd had a sock trick to go along with two assists. Sela McCarthy paced the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Shots on goal were a bit closer than the score would indicate with Carroll having 21 and the Roos 15. SUNY Canton had a couple extra ground balls winning that battle 13-11, but Carroll gained a lot of extra possessions with 18 draw control wins on 29 total.
  • Laura Falandys made five saves for the Roos. Hannah McKenna had a nice day with 12 saves, allowing eight goals.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will remain in the Philadelphia area for a game against the hosting Neumann Knights, on Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m.
