Marquart & Towson Lead Canton Bats in Twinbill Wednesday in South Carolina

Little River, SC – Madelin Marquart recorded three more hits and reached base four times, while Molly Dowson recorded a pair of hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap, but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a pair of games to King's College and Penn State Du Bois at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • King's jumped out to a quick lead in the opener scoring four runs on six hits in the first inning before adding two runs on two hits and an error in the second to lead 6-0 after two innings.
  • The Roos got on the board in the third inning as Marquart laced a one out triple down the left field line and scored on an Ace Rogers RBI ground out.
  • Canton had two other hits in the contest, an Adrianna Mathusa single down the right field line in the second and a Marquart base hit through the left side in the fifth but were unable to get any other runs across.
  • The Monarchs added one run in the third and four runs on three hits and an error in the fourth for the 11-1 run-rule win in five innings.
  • Marquart led the Roos going 2-for-3 with a triple and single scoring the team's lone run.
  • Six players recorded two hits each for King's as Meghan Marianelli and Molly Veach both had multi-hit outings driving in a pair of runs each.
  • Alyssa Fox improved to 3-1 on the season for the Monarchs tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings.
  • Bridgette Fox took the loss for Canton giving up five earned runs with a walk in three innings. Arianna Steele surrendered three earned runs in one inning of relief work.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
 
  • Canton got out to an early lead in the nightcap as Marquart drew a leadoff walk and Rogers followed with a single through the right side to move Marquart to third with no outs. Mathusa brought home Marquart on an RBI single to left center for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions were quick to respond with four runs on five hits in the second.
  • The Roos trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the third. Rylynn Martin-McIntyre legged out an infield bunt single to lead off the inning before Marquart reached base for the second time in as many at-bats with a single through the left side. After a pair of outs Dowson came up clutch with a two RBI base hit up the middle to plate Martin-McIntyre and Marquart.
  • Penn State Du Bois added insurance runs scoring two each in the fourth and sixth innings as Canton was unable to mount a comeback in the 8-3 loss.
  • Dowson went 2-for-3 driving in a pair of runs, while Marquart also reached base twice and scored twice. Rogers, Mathusa, Martin-McIntyre, Ava Bouchey and Emily Hobart had one hit each.
  • Jessy Frank paced the Lions with three hits and three RBI, while Sienna Barnhart, Natalie Bowser and Kayleigh Detz had two hits each.
  • Theresa Luongo picked up the win tossing a complete game with nine strike outs and a walk.
  • Sydney Tanner took the loss surrendering six earned runs with three strikeouts and no walks.

The Roos return to action on Thursday in Myrtle Beach when they square off with Penn State Harrisburg and Penn State Abington at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
