Canton, NY – Eli Bullock led the offense with three goals and two assists,
Liam Waite won 15 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls and
Hayden Todd made 14 saves as the men's lacrosse team won their season opener 12-10 against Castleton on Wednesday.
Canton doubled up the Spartans 6-3 in the third quarter including netting three goals in the final 2:18 of the frame. New SUNY Canton Head Coach Cam Talcott earned his first win in his first career game as a head coach.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visitors got on the board first when Taysean Metz netted his second of the season just under five minutes in.
- Brady Frost got the Roos on the board off the feed from Eli Bullock with 3:31 left in the opening quarter as the teams were tied on a snowy evening 1-1 after 15 minutes of action.
- The Spartans controlled the first part of the second stanza scoring three unanswered goals, two even strength, and one on the man-up to lead 4-1 with 8:01 left.
- From there it was all Roos as they scored the final three goals of the half. Charles Grandaw found Eystn Wylie on a quick pass out in front for the man-up score. Jonney Mclear caged his first of the season and two minutes later Grandaw was on the scoring end of things as the teams went to intermission tied at four.
- The Roos used their strong finish to the first half to start off the third quarter as Michael Newcomb made a great individual play from the right side to give Canton its first lead of the game at 5-4.
- The teams exchanged goals with Bullock and Mclear scoring for Canton as they continued to hold a 7-6 lead. Castleton got one back to tie it at seven, but the Roos rattled off three straight including two in the final minute to take a 10-7 lead after three quarters.
- The Spartans scored first in the fourth quarter, but the hosts answered back with two straight from Frost and Bullock to extend the lead to four, their largest of the game.
- Castleton added a couple late goals to get within two with just less than five minutes left to play, but Todd made three saves down the stretch to seal the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Bullock led all players with five points posting three goals and two assists, while Frost also scored three times. Grandaw and Mclear added two goals and an assist each, while Waite went 15-for-24 on faceoffs picking up a game-high seven ground balls. Newcomb and Wylie scored once each, while Cade Fregoe was a force defensively with five ground balls and a game-best four caused turnovers.
- Carter Frankenhoff paced the Spartans with four goals. Presto Kozlowski added a goal and three assists and Liam Evarts chipped in two goals and a helper.
- Todd made 14 saves in the win for the Roos, while Finn Maniaci turned aside 13 shots in defeat.
- The Roos held the upper hand in shots on goal (25-24), ground balls (37-30) and faceoffs (16-9). Canton was 1-for-6 on extra man opportunities, while the Spartans were 3-for-8.
