Three SUNY Canton Winter Sports Teams Set for SUNYAC Playoff Appearances

Canton, NY – Three different SUNY Canton winter sports teams have qualified for their respective SUNYAC Tournaments as the women's basketball and men's and women's hockey teams have all earned playoff berths for the second consecutive season.

The SUNY Canton women's basketball team has earned the three seed and will host the six seed Oneonta in a SUNYAC First Round game on Tuesday (2/24) at 7 p.m. in the Roos House. Tickets are free for all SUNYAC students with student ID, while tickets are $5 for adults and children 12 years old and younger. Tickets will only be sold in person (CASH ONLY) and ticket sales will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. For those who can't make the game in person there will be video and live stats available.
 
The SUNY Canton men's hockey team has earned the five seed and will visit the four seed Cortland in a SUNYAC Quarterfinal game on Wednesday (2/25) at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for SUNYAC students with student ID, and children four years and under. Tickets for adults 18 and older are $6, while children ages 5 to 17 are $4. Tickets can be purchased online only. For those who can't make the game in person there will be video and live stats available.
 
The SUNY Canton women's hockey team has earned the five seed and will visit the four seed William Smith in a SUNYAC First Round game on Wednesday (2/25) at 3 p.m. Tickets are free for SUNYAC students with student ID, while tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 years and younger – cash or credit card is accepted with tickets being sold starting one hour prior to puck drop at the venue.
   
SUNYAC Tournament Previews

Women's Basketball
The Roos went 19-6 overall and 12-6 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to claim the three seed. Oneonta finished the regular season 14-11 overall and 9-9 in league games to earn the six seed. The Roos swept the regular season series with the Red Dragons winning 58-50 in Oneonta on January 6 and 72-41 on January 27 in Canton. Kat McRobbie-Taru led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting, while Sierra Pabo tied her career-high with 28 points shooting 11-for-14 from the field in the second matchup.

The winner of Tuesday's matchup will square off with two seed Cortland on Friday (2/27) in New Paltz at 7:30 PM in a SUNYAC semifinal matchup. The winner of Tuesday's other first round game between five seed Oswego and four seed Plattsburgh will take on one seed New Paltz in the other semifinal matchup on Friday at 5:30 PM in New Paltz. The winners on Friday will play on Saturday (2/28) at 4 PM in New Paltz for the SUNYAC championship and the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament.
   
Men's Hockey
The Roos went 12-12-1 overall and 8-9-1 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to finish in fifth place in the standings. Canton travels to the four seed Cortland who finished the regular season 13-11-1 overall and 10-7-1 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons swept the regular season series winning 6-1 in Canton on December 6 and 2-1 in Cortland on February 6.

Logan Kelly and Colton Alexander scored the Canton goals in each meeting, respectively. Conor Humphrey scored twice, while Matthew DeSpirt, Nathan Garnier and Thomas Rockey all had a goal and assist each in the game in Canton. JC Humphreys score the game-winner 11:17 into the third period of the 2-1 victory in Cortland. Trey Miller made 31 saves in that contest, while Nolan Suggs turned aside 29 shots.

Unbeaten and No. 1 nationally-ranked Hobart (25-0-0, 18-0-0 SUNYAC) earned the top seed and will host eighth seeded Fredonia in a quarterfinal on Wednesday. Other quarterfinals include No. 2 Oswego hosting No. 7 Buffalo State and No. 3 Skidmore hosting No. 6 Plattsburgh. The winners of the quarterfinals will square off with the highest remaining seed hosting the lowest remaining seed and the second-highest remaining seed hosting the second lowest remaining seed in semifinal games on Saturday (2/28) at 7 p.m. The SUNYAC championship will take place at the highest remaining seed on Saturday (3/7) with the winner earning the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
 

Women's  Hockey
The Roos went 13-8-4 overall and 5-6-3 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to finish in fifth place in the standings. Canton will travel to No. 4 seed William Smith on Wednesday (2/25) for a SUNYAC First Round matchup. The Herons finished the regular season 11-14-0 and 7-7-0 in league play.

The teams split a pair of thrilling matchups in the regular season with each team winning on home ice. William Smith earned a 2-1 OT win on November 22. Kylah Small tied the game with less than nine seconds left in regulation before Kelly Howe scored the game-winner 3:41 into OT for the Herons. Just last weekend on February 20 the Roos earned a 2-1 win in Canton. Danika Lalonde and Riley Andzel each recorded a goal and assist with Lalonde netting the eventual game-winner 17:23 into the first period, while Molly Lenihan turned aside 28 of 29 shots (.965 save %) in the win.

In Wednesday's other first round matchup No. 3 seed Cortland will host No. 6 seed Potsdam. No. 1 Plattsburgh and No. 2 Oswego earned byes and will host semifinal games on Saturday (2/28) at 3 p.m. The Cardinals will host the lowest remaining seed, while the Lakers will host the second-lowest remaining seed. The winners of the two semifinal matchups will square off for the SUNYAC championship on Saturday (3/7) at the highest remaining seed. The SUNYAC champion will earn the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
