Balisciano, Roos Take Down Potsdam in Four-Set Victory

Canton, NY – Madalena Balisciano tallied 18 assists and three service aces as the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team took down Potsdam on Friday night, 3-1. Emerson Coulter and Abby Raven combined for 28 kills against the Bears.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set began with both squads locked in a 10-7 contest in favor of the Roos. The Bears then rattled off the next five points to go up two. The teams traded points as Canton reclaimed the lead at 15-14.
  • Potsdam responded with another run, this time stealing six points in a row to tilt the momentum in their favor. SUNY Canton refused to go down without a fight, claiming five consecutive points to tighten the score at 21-19. The Bears eventually won the first stanza, taking four of the final six points.
  • The Bears came out to a 5-2 lead to begin the second game. The Roos answered with eight of the next nine points, including four combined aces from Coulter and Raven, plus a kill from Viv Sieja.
  • As Canton held a 10-6 advantage over the visitors, both teams continued to fight for control of the court, bringing things to an 18-14 contest. An ace from Kaelyn Boliver followed by a kill from Clara Bond capped off another four-point streak to increase the Roos lead to eight. An Olivia Tran ace brought the Roos closer to the finish line before the Bears were closed out in set two, 25-17.
  • Potsdam came out motivated to begin the third set, establishing a 7-3 advantage early. SUNY Canton hung around, tightening the score to 10-9 after kills from Tionna Edghill and Sieja. The Roos began to take control, finding themselves up 18-14. Canton's offensive attack proved to be too much for Potsdam as the Roos stole the third set, 25-18.
  •  Looking to put a lid on the night's action, Canton jumped to an 8-2 edge after an ace from Coulter. The Bears stuck around as the score came out to 12-9, benefiting Canton. A six-point flurry expanded the Roos separation. After both squads briefly traded points, an ace from Sieja closed out the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Coulter led all players on the court with 15 kills while adding 16 digs and five aces. Raven tallied the second-most kills among all players with 13, adding three aces.
  • Sieja recorded seven kills, five digs and an ace. Boliver contributed 24 assists.
  • McKenna Pelech stood tall defensively, tallying six block assists with one solo block.
  • SUNY Canton outpaced the Bears in kills (49-28), aces (16-5) and digs (58-56).
