Raven, Roos Dominate VTSU Johnson in Home Opener

Canton, NY – Junior hitter Abby Raven paced the Roos with nine kills, three aces and five blocks as the SUNY Canton volleyball team kicked off the North Country Classic on a high note after they swept the VTSU Johnson Badgers Friday night at the Roos House.

The Roos took the first set by a score of 25-19, controlled the second set to win 25-14, and then pulled ahead late in the final set to earn the sweep with a 25-16 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first game was played evenly at 5-5, but the Roos got a decent-sized lead thanks to a kill from Raven and an ace by Nadia Frigon.
  • The Badgers tied it at 10, but SUNY Canton went on a run to bring their lead up to 17-11 with Isabella Cruz getting a kill and an ace by Emerson Coulter to help the Roos earn their largest lead of the game.
  • VTSU Johnson could not recover from this, and after a kill from Tionna Edghill, the Roos claimed victory in the first set 25-19.
  • The second set began with a 9-7 SUNY Canton lead, but the Roos then rattled off 10 straight points highlighted by two kills each from Raven and Madison Bigelow to get out ahead 19-7.
  • The Roos prevented any runs the rest of the set and went on to win by double figures, 25-14.
  • The third and final set was a bit tighter, but SUNY Canton still got ahead 10-8 early on.
  • A little later in the set, the Roos scored five straight points to pull ahead 20-13 with a kill from Raven and an ace by Bigelow.
  • The Badgers got just three more points in the set, and after an ace by Lauren Norman, the Roos won the set 25-16, to get the sweep in their home opener.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Raven led the Roos in kills (9), aces (3), and blocks (5). Coulter and Brooke Hite each logged six kills.
  • Bigelow contributed with four kills, two service aces, and led the defense with eight digs. Norman and Frigon splitting the setting duties had 15 and 13 assists, respectively. Norman had two aces while Frigon got five digs.
  • Max Ludlow had eight kills and seven digs for the Badgers, while Alana Lewis had 11 digs and two aces.
  • SUNY Canton had a .230 hitting percentage in the game (35-15-87) while VTSU Johnson was held to a flat .000 (18-18-78). The Roos also led in kills (35-18) and digs (39-31), among other categories.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The North Country Classic will continue tomorrow, September 12 where the Roos will have a doubleheader, first playing Hilbert at 11 a.m. and then Cobleskill at 3 p.m.
