Roos Balanced Offensively, Regis Nets Game-Winner as Time Expires

Canton, NY – Austin Mesler, Eli Bullock and Michael Newcomb all registered multi-point outings but a strong third quarter and game-winner as time expired lifted visiting Regis to a 10-9 win against the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams got off to a slow start as Regis led 2-0 midway through the opening quarter. Canton responded with two tallies in the last 35 seconds of the frame from Alex Jacobs and Eli Bullock as the teams were tied at two after 15 minutes.
  • The offense picked up for the Roos in the second stanza as they outscored the Pride 6-2. Austin Mesler scored three times and Michael Newcomb scored twice in the quarter as Canton led 8-4 at halftime.
  • The Pride dominated the third quarter outscoring Canton 4-0 to tie things up at 8-8 headed to the final quarter. Regis scored three of their four goals with the man-up advantage as Canton was whistled for five infractions in the quarter.
  • Neither team scored until Jonney Mclear gave Canton a 9-8 lead with 9:17 remaining.
  • Jack Jaynes tied things up with 1:05 left on his third goal of the day. With time winding down Evan Azary released a shot just before the final horn as it found the back of the net for the game-winner as time expired for the 10-9 Regis win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler led the Roos with five points on three goals and two assists, while Bullock had a goal and two assists and Necomb scored twice. Charles Grandaw, Jacobs and Mclear scored once each. Caeden Goodnough tied a game-high with seven ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Jake Erskine added six ground balls. Liam Waite went 13-for-21 on faceoffs with five ground balls.
  • Jaynes paced Regis with seven points on three goals and four assists to go with seven ground balls. Liam Donovan and Brendan Cook finished with four points each.
  • Devin Hammon made 13 saves in the win for Regis, while Hayden Todd turned aside 10 shots in defeat.
  • SUNY Canton had advantages in shots on goal (22-20), ground balls (46-33) and faceoffs (14-8).
  • Regis went 3-for-9 on extra man opportunities, while Canton was 0-for-1.
