Women’s Basketball Storms Back in Second Half as New Paltz Survives Late

Canton, NY – The Roos stormed back to cut a 22 point second half deficit to just five in the fourth quarter but visiting SUNY New Paltz survived 89-79 in a SUNYAC women's basketball battle on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but New Paltz battled back to take an 11-9 lead just over four minutes in. The Hawks closed the final 2:56 of the first quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 26-18 lead after the opening quarter.
  • The Hawks led 52-38 at intermission. Sierra Pabo paced Canton with 12 points, while Natalie Bartle had 10 and Kat McRobbie-Taru added eight. Abby Korzekwinski tallied 15 for the visitors, while Hannah Vanderzee and Madison Mullman added 13 and 12, respectively.
  • The Roos trailed by as many as 22 (69-47) with 52 seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Canton used a 27-10 run to trim the deficit to just five after a pair of McRobbie-Taru free throws with 3:25 remaining.
  • After a defensive stop Canton had a chance to cut the lead to just two but the Hawks were able to hang on for the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Pabo and Hope Aniceto led the Roos with 18 points each, while McRobbie-Taru tallied her first career double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. Bartle finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists, while Torie Moore and Chelsie Tyler added five points each.
  • Vanderzee led all players with 23 points, while Julia Sabatino was one assist short of a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Korzekwinski (19), Mullman (12) and Sophia Bonnell (12) all scored in double figures in a balanced Hawk attack.
  • The Roos had the upper hand in rebounds (46-38) and second chance points (16-12).
  • New Paltz controlled points in the paint (44-28), points off turnovers (20-9) and bench points (17-7).
  • The Hawks shot 46% from the floor and 35% from three-point range, while Canton had marks of 35% and 32%, respectively. The Roos shot a remarkable 96% from the line (21-for-22).

The Roos return to SUNYAC action on Friday when they visit Plattsburgh State at 5:30 p.m.
