Mesler Records Game-High Seven Points, Todd Stops 18 Shots in OT Loss at Keuka

Keuka Park, NY – Austin Mesler tallied game-highs of four goals and seven points and Hayden Todd made 18 saves, but the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team dropped a tight battle 13-12 in overtime at Keuka College on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Keuka got off to a strong start as Ian Rickard scored the first three goals of the game. The Roos responded running off five straight to take a 5-3 lead after the opening quarter. Alex Jacobs and Tanner Amell scored two each in the first for Canton.
  • The teams exchanged a pair of goals to start the second stanza, but three straight tallies from Mesler gave the Roos a 9-5 advantage with just over three minutes left in the opening half.
  • The Wolves netted the final two goals of the half to get within 9-7 at intermission.
  • The hosts would tack on two more to start the third tying things at nine apiece midway through the third.
  • Jacobs put home back-to-back scores in the matter of 13 seconds to give Canton an 11-9 lead, but three straight from Keuka gave the Wolves a 12-11 lead headed to the fourth.
  • In what proved to be a defensive battle in the fourth quarter Rory McCabe scored the lone marker of the frame with 11:21 left in regulation to knot things up.
  • Todd made 13 saves in the second half including stopping all seven he faced in the fourth quarter as the game headed to OT.
  • Keuka won the opening faceoff of OT and just 41 seconds into the extra session Devon Gerhardt found Harrison Root for the game-winning goal.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler led all players with seven points and four goals while adding three assists. Jacobs finished with four goals and an assist. Amell scored twice and Carter Pooler and McCabe had the other scores. Devin Guerriero won 16 of his 28 faceoffs, picked up five ground balls and dished out a pair of assists. McCabe registered a team-high six ground balls, while Rilee St. Croix had five and caused two turnovers.
  • Dylan Delucia led Keuka with four goals, while Rickard had three goals and an assist and Nicholas Pipher added three scores.
  • Dylan Hoad made 12 saves for Keuka in the win, while Todd turned aside 18 shots in defeat for the Roos.
  • Keuka had the edge in shots on goal (31-24) and ground balls (29-27). Canton controlled faceoffs 16-12.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are scheduled to return to action on Saturday when they visit Thomas College at 11 a.m.
