Mesler & Goodnough Lead Roos Past Tigers

Roos Remain Perfect at 5-0 in NAC Play

Cobleskill, NY – Austin Mesler and Caeden Goodnough combined for 17 points as the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team remained perfect in NAC play at 5-0 cruising to a 20-7 win at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to a quick 6-0 start after the opening quarter behind a goal and five assists from Mesler and two goals from Alex Jacobs.
  • Goodnough scored the first goal of the second stanza before Cobleskill finally got on the board just over 90 seconds into the second.
  • Canton caged the final two scores of the second quarter from Goodnough to take a commanding 9-1 lead into intermission.
  • The Roos kept the foot on the gas pedal with Carter Pooler and Tanner Amell scoring out of intermission to extend the lead to 11-1 as the Roos opened a 15-5 advantage after 45 minutes.
  • Mesler, Pooler, Amell, Rory McCabe and Michael Newcomb tacked on fourth quarter scores for the 20-7 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler led all players with 10 points and six assists to go with four goals and five ground balls. Goodnough finished with five goals, two assists and seven ground balls, while Amell added three goals and one assist. Jacobs and Pooler registered two goals and one assist each, Newcomb scored twice, Sean Hornung had a goal and assist and Rory McCabe scored once.  
  • Rob Staubitz paced the Tigers with two goals and one assist, while Albert Sippio added a pair of goals.
  • Hayden Todd made 11 saves (.917 save %) allowing just one goal in the first half to earn the win. Sam Servati made 10 stops (.625 save %) in the second half.
  • James Meier finished with 18 saves in the loss for Cobleskill.
  • SUNY Canton held the upper hand in shots on goal (38-28), ground balls (47-29) and faceoffs (16-15).

The Roos are back in NAC action on Wednesday when they visit SUNY Morrisville at 4 p.m.
