Martin Nets Fifth of the Year at Utica

Utica, NY – Sam Martin recorded his fifth goal of the season but host and No. 3 nationally-ranked Utica College scored five unanswered goals for a 5-1 win v. the SUNY Canton men's hockey team on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just 11 seconds after the Roos were whistled for the first penalty of the game Martin came through beating Louis-Felix St. Jean from the left wing. Sebastien Paquette and Jarrod Croswell were credited with assists on just the second shorthanded tally of the season for the Roos.
  • Utica responded just 35 seconds later with the skater advantage knotting the game at one apiece off the stick of Dante Zapata on a wrister from the slot.
  • The Pioneers held a slim 9-6 edge in shots in the first period as the teams skated to first intermission tied at one.
  • The Pioneers, who ranked fourth nationally on the power play entering the contest converting at 32%, would add their second power play marker at 15:36 of the middle period. Jayson Dobay scored on a long shot through traffic.
  • Utica opened its lead to 3-1 at 18:24 of the second when Regen Cavanagh wired a cross-ice pass to Buster Larsson who beat Pierce Diamond over the shoulder. The hosts led 3-1 after two.
  • The Pioneers added an insurance marker at 7:06 of the third when Brian Scoville netted his third of the season.
  • Canton went on the power play with 1:22 remaining and pulled Diamond for a two skater advantage with 1:12 to play. Utica added an empty-netter shorthanded goal from Mic Curran with two seconds remaining.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Utica outshot Canton 31-15 and edged the Roos 27-25 in face offs.
  • The Pioneers converted a third of their power play chances scoring twice in six opportunities. Canton went 0-for-3.
  • Diamond finished with 26 saves for the Roos, while St. Jean turned aside 14 shots for Utica.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The men's hockey team returns to action on Friday when it hosts Rivier University at 7 p.m. The team will be wearing special jerseys and hosting a cancer awareness night.
