Canton, NY – Filip Jakobsson recorded a goal and assist and
Jake Mayette tallied a pair of assists as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a 4-1 win v. Rivier University on Friday evening.
The Roos hosted a cancer awareness game on Friday with a ceremonial puck drop prior to the contest. SUNY Canton recognized the Deblasiis, Headland, Jakobsson and Diamond families after their loved ones lost their courageous battle with cancer.
The team also wore special jerseys, held a silent auction and has worked to raise funds for the
Cancer Research Institute online as well as the
Nikki Deblasiis Foundation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visitors got on the board first at 13:20 of the opening period off the stick of Milan Breczko scoring with the skater advantage. The Roos held a 20-12 shots advantage in the opening period but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.
- Canton outshot Rivier 17-10 in the second period and that finally paid off when they converted on a pair of goals just 18 seconds apart. Jarrod Croswell got the hosts on the board at the 4:16 mark of the middle period when he redirected a Filip Jakobsson shot from the right point out in front. The puck went off Croswell's stick and up and over Raider goaltender Andrew LoRusso. It marked the first career goal for Croswell. Jake Mayette also set up the play with a cross-ice pass to Jakobsson.
- The Roos won the ensuing face off and Brady Morrison drove the puck to the right side where the rebound came out to Zac Sirota at the far post as he ripped a shot top shelf past LoRusso.
- The Raiders pulled the goalie with 2:25 remaining and Jakobsson lit the lamp just eight seconds later with Mayette picking up a helper off the face off win.
- Roughly 30 seconds later the visitors pulled LoRusso again and 31 seconds later Matthew Headland sealed the win with another empty-netter as Sam Martin picked up an assist.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Roos dominated shots 58-24 and controlled face offs 39-30.
- Rivier went 1-for-3 on the power play, while killing off their lone penalty.
- Pierce Diamond made 23 saves in the win for the Roos, while LoRusso turned aside 54 shots for Rivier.
WHAT'S NEXT?
These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Roos will celebrate Senior Day.
