Season Preview: 2021-22 Women’s Hockey

Canton, NY – The 2021-22 SUNY Canton women's hockey team features 22 student-athletes as the team opens the regular season on Saturday as they visit King's College at 3:30 p.m.
 
The Roos and Monarchs will play again on Sunday at 3 p.m. After nearly two weeks off Canton will host Morrisville in their home and Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) opener on November 12th at 4 p.m. The team will play five straight games on the road before hosting six consecutive games at home. Including the Class of 2024, the Roos will welcome 14 new players to the ice since the team last played a regular season game during the 2019-20 campaign. Senior Micayla MacIntyre and sophomore Meaghan Best will lead the team as captains, while junior Verity Lewis and sophomore Iida Laitinen will serve as assistant captains. The three returning players in the leadership group combined for 32 points on eight goals and 24 assists during their last season on the ice.
 
SUNY Canton brings back five of its eight leading returning scorers from the 2019-20 season. Sarah Kosnaskie led the way with 13 points on a team-leading nine goals with four assists. Best posted 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Hannah Desrochers (4G-7A-11P), MacIntyre (1G-10A-11P) and Lewis (3G-6A-9P) are also all key returners for the team.  
 
The Roos return Sirena Alvarez in goal who appeared in 14 contests in 2019-20 registering a .903 save percentage and 3.00 goals against average on her way to a 5-5-1 record.   
 
   
The NEWHL released its preseason coaches' poll on Thursday as the Roos were selected to finish in fifth place with 22 points out of the seven-team conference. Plattsburgh State, who has won five of the last six NCAA Division III women's hockey national championships, was unanimously picked to win the conference title with 49 points and all seven first-place votes. Oswego State (42) was picked second, while Cortland (34) and Morrisville (25) rounded out the top four.
 
"When the puck drops this weekend, it will have been 616 days since our last hockey game," SUNY Canton Women's Hockey Head Coach Dave LaBaff said. "We are extremely excited to be playing games again, and are looking forward to the competition within the NEWHL."
   
SUNY Canton's 14 newcomers from two seasons ago include seven sophomores and seven freshmen. The new student-athletes feature nine forwards, four defensemen and a combo forward/defenseman. Meet the new players from the last time the Roos took the ice, who are listed below numerically.
