Women’s Volleyball Closes out Canton Classic, Robinson Named to All-Tournament Team

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to finish the two-day Canton Classic 2-2 as they played both games at home in the Roos House on Saturday.

The Roos fell 3-0 (18-25, 23-25, 12-25) to Elmira College before dropping a 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 22-25) decision to St. Lawrence University to close out the tournament.

Match 1 – Box Score
Elmira jumped out to a fast start in the opening set leading 23-9 but the Roos rallied running off seven straight points to get within 23-16 before the Soaring Eagles eventually prevailed 25-18. The second set was close throughout before Elmira opened a 22-16 advantage.

Trailing 24-19, SUNY Canton tallied four straight points off a pair of Jocelyn Racette service aces and kills from Shea Norton and Marissa Ixtlahuac to get within 24-23 but EC closed the set with a kill from Lauren Smith. The Soaring Eagles controlled play in the third set to close out the match, 25-12.
 

Norton led the Roos with 11 kills and 10 digs for a double-double but also tied a match-high with seven hitting errors. Melissa McMaster and Marissa Ixtlahuac added five and four kills, respectively, while Jenna Roat added a team-best 13 digs. Peyton Robinson assisted on 24 points and totaled eight digs.

Natalie Schieder led Elmira (10-6) with 14 kills but also produced seven hitting errors. Rachel Katzenberger paced the defense with 15 digs, while Taylor Kaznowski and Kasey Campbell added nine apiece. Kaznowski set up the offense with 24 assists and three service aces.

Match 2 – Box Score
The first set proved to be a back-and-forth battle between the crosstown rivals as they were tied at 15 apiece midway through the set. The Saints tried to pull away late going ahead 23-19 but the Roos rattled off five straight points to take a 24-23 lead. The Saints scored three straight points that included a service ace from Masha Kolesnikova and Marissa Parker closed the set with a kill.

The Saints jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the middle set earning a 25-18 win and although the Roos battled to try and force a fourth set they came up just short, 25-22 in the third and final frame.
 

Norton struck for nine kills on 30 swings for the Roos, while Ixtlahuac added five putdowns. Robinson led the offense with 22 assists and added 11 digs, while Roat posted 22 digs defensively.

Masha Kolesnikova led the Saints (14-6) with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Julia Wagner added 12 kills and Katie Kull dished out 39 assists with 16 digs. Kolesnikova and Kull posted three service aces apiece, while Racette had two aces for the Roos (5-12).

Peyton Robinson and Katie Kull were named to the All-Tournament Team for their play throughout the tournament.
The women's volleyball team is back in action next weekend when it takes part in the Lycoming Tournament.
