McMaster Posts 22 Kills on Opening Day at Lycoming

Williamsport, PA – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday evening to open play at the Lycoming Tournament. After falling in the opening match 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 16-25) to Penn State Behrend, the Roos narrowly lost 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 5-25, 27-25, 12-15) to host Lycoming College in the nightcap.

Match 1 – Box Score
The Roos dropped the opening match 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 despite recording five more kills than their opponents (40-35). The hitting percentages proved to be the difference maker as the Roos committed 21 errors (40-21-98, .194), while the Lions (9-10) were nearly perfect with just three mishits (35-3-77, .416).

Marissa Ixtlahuac and Shea Norton totaled 10 kills apiece, while Melissa McMaster added eight kills. Sydney Uthe chipped in seven kills to go with a match-high 11 digs, while Jenna Roat also added 11 digs. Peyton Robinson totaled a match-high 35 assists.

Match 2 – Box Score
SUNY Canton (5-14) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in its second match behind a 25-19 opening set victory, however host Lycoming (11-9) bounced back with 25-19 and 25-5 wins in the second and third sets.

The fourth set proved to be a back-and-forth battle that went to extra points and after facing match point to the hosts the Roos rattled off three straight points for the win. McMaster posted back-to-back kills to clinch the fourth set, 27-25.

The Roos fell behind 4-1 in the final frame and battled back before falling 15-12 in the final set.

McMaster paced the Roos with 14 kills, while Norton added eight to go with 12 digs. Jenna Roat totaled 24 digs and Robinson dished out 33 assists to accompany her 15 digs.

The women's volleyball team is back in action on Saturday when it squares off with Alfred State College and Elizbaethtown College at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
