Women’s Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Day 1 of Canton Classic

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball earned a pair of wins sweeping Cazenovia 3-0 and defeating Wells College 3-1 to start the Canton Classic unbeaten on Friday at Burkman Gymnasium on the campus of St. Lawrence University.

The Roos improve to 5-10 on the season with the 25-8, 25-8, 25-14 win v. the Wildcats (3-13) and the 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20 win v. the Express (10-6).

Match 1 – Box Score
The Roos roared out to an 18-5 start in the opening set and scored the final five points to earn a 25-8 opening set victory. Once again, the team dictated play from the start leading 13-3 after 16 points in the middle set. Canton tallied nine of the final 10 points behind the service game of Peyton Robinson and Skye Hansen closed out the frame with an ace.

Cazenovia hung tough in the final set trailing the Roos just 8-7 early on. However, Canton rattled off five consecutive points that included a pair of kills from Norton that turned a 10-8 lead into a 15-8 advantage as they closed out the match, 25-14.

Norton led all players with 10 kills, while Melissa McMaster and Marissa Ixtlahuac added five and four, respectively. Robinson dished out 24 assists to go with eight digs and Jenna Roat recorded a match-best 12 digs defensively. The Roos controlled play from the service line producing 18 service aces in comparison to just three for the Wildcats (3-13). Skye Hansen paced the Roos with five aces in the match.
 
Match 2 – Box Score
The Roos jumped out to a two sets to none lead in the nightcap but a pesky Wells squad bounced back with a third set victory and got within 20-19 in the fourth set However, SUNY Canton battled back with five of the final six points to close out the match, 25-20.

Hansen paced the Roos with 10 kills, while Norton, Ixtlahuac and Jordan Dormady finished with nine kills each and McMaster added eight. Robinson had a monster double-double on 38 assists and 20 digs, while Roat and Sydney Uthe recorded 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Day 2 of the Canton Classic on Saturday at the Roos House when it welcomes Elmira College and St. Lawrence at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
