Plattsburgh, NY – Sophomore
Shea Norton posted 25 kills recording match-highs in both outings but the SUNY Canton volleyball team fell in a pair of five set matches to open the 2017 season at the Cardinal Classic on Friday.
The Roos fell 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 17-25, 25-20, 15-11) to host Plattsburgh before dropping a 3-2 decision to Wheaton (25-8, 13-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-12).
Match 1 – Box Score
After falling behind early in the opening set the Roos battled back and held a 22-20 advantage late in the first after a service ace from freshman
Sydney Uthe. The host Cardinals answered with three consecutive tallies to take a one point lead but following a Roos timeout Canton posted three consecutive scores off kills from
Skye Hansen and
Melissa McMaster along with a Plattsburgh attack error to seal the first set, 25-23.
Plattsburgh opened an 18-7 advantage cruising to a 25-12 second set win to knot the match at one. The Roos battled back on enemy territory with a 25-17 decision in the third frame that included a 17-8 start. Â
The Cardinals edged the Roos 25-20 in the fourth setting up the decisive fifth set. The hosts roared out to an 11-3 start but Canton tallied four straight points forcing a time out and would eventually get within 13-11 before Plattsburgh closed out the match, 15-11.
The Roos had at least 12 kills in three of the five sets as
Shea Norton (match-high 14) and Hansen (11) led the way.
Marissa Ixtlahuac and McMaster added eight kills apiece, while
Jenna Roat totaled a match-best 26 digs and Norton added 14 for the double-double.
Peyton Robinson dished out a match-high 46 assists
Match 2 – Box Score
Wheaton jumped out to a fast start with a 25-8 victory in the opening set but the Roos showed their mental toughness with 25-13 and 25-21 wins in the second and third sets, respectively. Wheaton evened the match 25-14 in the fourth setting up another match that would go the distance. Canton fell behind 12-9 in the fifth and was unable to get closer than two points the remainder of the way as the Lyons pulled out the five-set victory, 15-12.
