Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team extended its win streak to nine matches with a pair of wins over Rochester Institute of Technology and Hartwick College on the second day of the Canton Classic at the Roos House on Saturday.
The Roos fought off a pesky Tiger squad, 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 16-25, 25-16) before sweeping the Hawks, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-15).
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) led the Roos with 11 kills in the opening match against RIT, while
Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) added eight kills.
Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) floored eight kills to go with her six digs, while
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) posted a team-high 15 digs.
Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) assited a match-high 37 kills while collecting eight digs defensively. Sarah Szybist led all players with 24 kills, while Abby Higgins added nine for the Tigers.
SUNY Canton got out to a quick 17-9 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-14 victory. The second set proved much closer as the Roos held an 8-5 advantage early, but outscored the Tigers 17-10 down the stretch. SUNY Canton had 21 kills compared to just four errors in the first two frames, but nine errors in the third stanza allowed RIT to claim a 25-16 win. The Roos regrouped in the fourth set jumping out to an 18-8 advantage to close out the match.
The hosts put up a dominant performance in their second match of the day against Hartwick, not allowing the Hawks to get more than 15 points in any set during the sweep. Reynolds posted a match-high 10 kills to go with eight digs. Bills added nine kills, while Carroll dug up a match-high 18 balls. Mynter dished out 30 assists, while
Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) finished with three total blocks.
For their efforts leading SUNY Canton as the only undefeated team in the Canton Classic
Robyn Carroll was named MVP and
Jessica Reynolds earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
