Box Score
Winchendon, MA –
Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season to give the women's hockey team an early lead but they could not hold on falling, 3-1, to host Franklin Pierce University Saturday afternoon at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The win improves the Ravens to 9-1-0, while the Roos drop to 4-7-2.
After a majority of the first period was scoreless SUNY Canton was first to find the back of the net.
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) fed the puck to Kistabish as she cut from right-to-left across the slot. Kistabish shot the puck across her body and beat Franklin Pierce goaltender Shannon O'Neil through the five-hole for the early 1-0 lead.
With just 37 seconds remaining in the opening frame the Ravens knotted it at one on the power play when Michaela Faia received the puck at the bottom of the right circle and sniped a shot into the top right corner past Roo net minder
Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE). Karsyn Baker and Sarah Sheils earned assists on the play. Despite Franklin Pierce holding an 18-8 shots on goal edge it was tied 1-1 on the scoreboard at the first intermission.
Neither team was able to beat the goaltender in the second period, as Dominique stood strong with 13 saves. Just 1:14 into the third period Baker scored her fourth goal in two games off passes from Sheils and Collen Doucette. Sheils took the initial shot that was saved by Dominique but the rebound went right to Baker who lifted it top shelf for the score.
Midway through the period the Ravens added an important insurance marker from Haley Barbieri. Sheils made a nifty pass through the neutral zone that sent Barbieri into a break into the offensive zone where she finished to make it 3-1, the eventual final score.
SUNY Canton went 0-for-2 on the power play while the Ravens were 1-for-3 with the extra skater in a pretty clean game for both teams.
Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) led the Roos with five shots on goal, while
Bernadette O'Connell (Buffalo, NY) and
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) challenged O'Neil four times each. Dominique stopped 38 shots for SUNY Canton, while O'Neil turned aside 24 shots for Franklin Pierce.
The women's hockey team has completed the 2013 portion of its schedule and will return to the ice Saturday, January 4th when it travels to take on Utica College at 7:00 p.m. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
