Women’s Hockey Powers Past Bears, 3-2

Canton, NY – The Roos went a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play with Jane Pancoe scoring the game-winner with the skater advantage in the third period as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team earned a crucial 3-2 SUNYAC win against visiting SUNY Potsdam on Friday evening.
 
Canton sits in fifth place in the league standings with 11 points with three games remaining in the regular season just one point back of Oswego. The three and four seeds host first round playoff games. With the loss the Bears fall to sixth in the standings with nine points, as the top six teams qualify for the playoffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton got on the board first at 13:48 of the opening period as Kyra O'Keefe scored on a sharp-angled shot with Isabella Paswaters and Bailey Cote picking up helpers on the play.
  • The Roos held a 10-4 shots on goal advantage in the opening period taking a 1-0 lead to first intermission.
  • The hosts doubled their lead at 2:24 of the middle period with the skater advantage. Anna Pavlasova played the puck from the right circle to Lucy Beal at the left point. She wristed a shot through traffic that was redirected by Danika Lalonde past Magalie Parent.
  • The Bears got one back late in the stanza on the power play as Rachelle Cain lit the lamp off a pass from Jessika Bullock. Canton dominated shots 12-4 in the period leading 2-1 after 40 minutes.
  • The Roos lit the lamp once again on the power play at 6:29 of the third. Paswaters collected the puck finding Sydney Valiquette at the left point. She swung the puck to Pancoe at the right point as she ripped a slapshot on a one-timer that appeared to redirect off a Potsdam defenseman top shelf.
  • Potsdam got within one midway through the third off a Marissa Whiteside tally with Coralie Paradis and Bullock credited with helpers on the play.
  • Potsdam pulled Parent for the extra skater with 57 seconds left. The Bears got off a couple of quality shot attempts as Molly Lenihan recorded a save before Elise Clifford hit the pipe with 27 seconds left. Beal then blocked a shot as Canton held on for the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Paswaters led the Roos with a pair of assists and a +1 on-ice rating. Bullock had a pair of assists for the visitors.
  • Canton was a perfect 2-for-2 on the power play, while the Bears were 1-for-3.
  • Lenihan made 16 saves in the win, while Parent turned aside 33 shots in defeat.
