Canton, NY – Brady Frost and
Charles Grandaw each tallied a pair of goals with Frost also getting an assist, but the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team lost their conference home opener to the New Paltz Hawks 17-5 on Friday.
THE BASICS
- Result: New Paltz 17, SUNY Canton 5
- Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (2-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) | New Paltz (3-7, 1-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was all Hawks early on, with four unanswered goals to begin the game. With 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Grandaw made some nice moves in front of the New Paltz net, scoring five-hole to put the Roos on the board, although the Hawks were still up 4-1 at first quarter's end.
- SUNY Canton had some difficulties finding the target in the second quarter with 11 of 15 shots missing the cage and going scoreless in the second stanza. New Paltz capitalized with five shots on net in the period, scoring on three of them to pull ahead 7-1 at half.
- Grandaw scored again in the third quarter, but the deficit became even larger with New Paltz pouring on nine goals in the quarter.
- There were a lot of positives in the final quarter for SUNY Canton. Frost had a hand in all three goals in the quarter, scoring twice and assisting on another score by Jonney Mclear.
- Unfortunately, though, the Roos were just down too much and fell 17-5 to the Hawks in their home conference opener.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Both Grandaw and Frost had two goals in the defeat while Mclear scored one. Mclear's was his 10th of the season while Frost got his season total up to a team-high 12. Cade Fregoe had a nice day on the defensive end with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Four caused turnovers in a game are tied for the highest single game total of any player on the team this season.
- Colin Cleary and Killian Yombor combined for nine of the 17 goals for the Hawks. Finn Smith had two goals plus three assists while also recording four groundballs.
- New Paltz roughly doubled up the Roos in shots on goal 33-16. The Roos did not capitalize on any of their extra man opportunities, going 0-for-5. The Hawks were 3-for-9.
- Hayden Todd made 13 saves on 28 shots. Garritt Palmer subbed in late in the third quarter to stop three of five possible shots on net the rest of the game.
