Alfred, NY – Hayden Todd made 12 saves and
Garritt Palmer stopped five of the six shots he faced in his collegiate debut, but the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-5 road contest to the Alfred Saxons Wednesday night.
THE BASICS
- Result: Alfred 15, SUNY Canton 5
- Location: Yunevich Stadium – Alfred, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (1-2) | Alfred (4-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Roos found themselves in a hole early with the Saxons scoring three times before the Roos even got the ball on the Alfred side of the field.
- The middle of the first quarter was much better defensively for SUNY Canton. By causing turnovers and a few nice saves by Todd, the Roos kept the Saxons off the scoreboard, but offensively had some difficulty taking care of the ball, failing to get many shots off in the quarter.
- Alfred scored a couple more times in the final two minutes and took a 5-0 lead after 15 minutes.
- SUNY Canton cleaned up the defense to quite an extent in the second quarter but still had a tough time clearing the ball and winning faceoff, failing to cause significant pressure on the Saxons end.
- Jonney Mclear had three shots on goal in the quarter, but to no avail as the Roos trailed 7-0 heading into the second half.
- Eli Bullock had a nice look in the third quarter, but the Roos finally broke through with a perimeter shot by Mclear finding the twine with 6:50 left in the third quarter.
- Just 1:03 later, a cutting Bullock was seen by Brady Frost for a nice two-man game resulting in the second goal for the Roos.
- Brady Frost scored the third goal of the period for SUNY Canton, but the relentless offense by the Saxons put on seven in the quarter as the Roos faced a 14-3 deficit.
- Towards the end of the fourth quarter, Mclear added to his total with an intercepted pass in the Saxons zone and then went all alone to score on Alfred for his second goal of the night.
- Mclear scored once again right before time expired to complete the hat trick as the Roos outscored the home team 2-1 in the final quarter but lost the game 15-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Mclear put in three of the five goals for the Roos to get up to a team-high seven on the season. Bullock and Frost scored the other two. Frost also had six ground balls and Cade Fregoe headlined the SUNY Canton defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
- The Saxons had five players with at least two goals, led by Brendan Riley with four goals, two assists, and also leading Alfred with seven ground balls.
- The Saxons had 32 shots on goal to the Roos 13. Turnovers were matched at 20, but a crooked number of faceoffs were won by Alfred as they gained possession on 22 of the possible 23, holding SUNY Canton without a win until the fourth quarter.
- Hayden Todd made 14 saves on 26 total shots through three quarters. Garritt Palmer, who subbed in at the start of the fourth quarter, began his collegiate career on a high note with five saves on six shots.
